It was the first Manics song I consciously heard, I'd only heard of the Manics in the context of Richie's disappearance until then. Or, to be precise, it was in the good old days of MTV, so I saw the video along with it. I could not make out a word James was singing (well, apart from the song title), but I was extremely moved by the video and the atmosphere of the song.
I also loved Everything Must Go, which I discovered via MTV as well, and I deeply love both songs, probably because they dug their way into my subconsciousness at an impressible age.
I was a bit intimidated by the intensity, though, and by "that creepy-looking bassplayer" (sorry Wire, I love you now!), so I didn't pick up the album or even the singles.
Design and ME are to me what national anthems are for "normal" people, I think, they give me a sense of elation and belonging. Which is why I cannot accept Tolerate as a gig closer, it's blasphemy!

One of my favourite Manics singles. I'm a bit bored of hearing it live but it's way way way better than the likes of ME, MJ and Tolerate. A lovely way to finish off any MSP gig.

When I was growing up, I pretty much ignored every band apart from Queen... yes, I know. I remember the video but don't remember anything about the song at all when it was released.......

I feel I missed out on the Richey era Manics because everyone at my school listened to rap and metal (anyone remember Grave Diggaz, they were very popular) so I never got exposed to it. The only band that I liked that they liked was Nirvana but I was very much into grunge and American bands, and before that the likes of Queen. But then I went to uni and finally got exposed to some decent music! Luckily there was a second hand music shop and I managed to buy the silve ADFL single. Loved the sonic mix of Motorcycle

Not only A Design For Life and not only Manics. I'm hearing songs from New Model Army, songs from the 1980's, mostly criticising Tacher's government. But.... Still actual today, and sometimes it feels like they're actual today more than ever.

I find it frightening that such songs are still actual for nowadays' times, really. It means our society hasn't changed a bit.

I know I am in the minority but I would still love to see them kick off a gig with ADFL. I think it'd just work, like when it came second on the PPF series of gigs. Finishing with MJ or somemthing of equal measure would just be different

Heard regularly on Chris Evans's breakfast show on Radio 1 in '96. Probably one of the first songs I got into... at the time, to me, it sounded like about the heaviest rock I'd ever heard and I thought they were American

I would have thought that after that patronising post budget poster thing that this would have been the perfect choice for a 'Let's get this to No1' style campaign.

I haven't listened to it or any versions of it in a very long time but I still agree that it has been their greatest come back single ever. I would love for the Manics to release another song like this which isn't Indian Summer.

the song couldn't be the ghost town for this time or have one of those 'lets get this to #1' song because bar manics fans, and people with a bit of savvy, most don't understand the lyric.

"we only want to get drunk" is as much a criticism as it is a celebration as wire said (in the EMG dvd I believe) yet drunken football hooligan yobbos are too stupid to understand that and think its an anthem for getting pissed to - a magaluf holiday anthem

I seriously doubt that ADFL gets much play in Magaluf nightclubs.
