While it is a cover, James' beautiful version of To See A Friend In Tears has got to be worth ten, twenty, thirty I'd Love A Pasty's.
I don't think he'll ever record anything quite so heartbreakingly fucking gorgeous again.

Aye it sits better on the record than the 'Working Class hero' cover on SATT, too.

I think James' version of TSAFIT is by far the worst thing on either TGW or SATT. It sounds so dry and workmanlike. Really breaks the flow of the record and usually warrants a skip. I detested their Working Class Hero, too.

How would you make it less that way?

Have him sing a song he means, and feels, rather than one he reveres. To me it sounds as though there's none of him in it, no feeling, no emotional engagement and considering the strength of some of the covers they've done over the years that is pretty poor. And the production is weak in terms of the album - I understand a relatively acoustic interlude, but it just sounds thin.
I'd replace it with his version of Endless Plain of Fortune, which is everything TSAFIT could/should've been.

I like that song. He sounds like he is giving quite a emotive performance and that he really gets into what he is singing with some of the last lines of the verses sang in a slightly angry tone.
Who originally did "Endless Plain of Fortune"? |

Agree. I like the song but it doesn't sit well with the other songs on the album which are personal songs to James. This should have been a bonus track on one of the singles at best.

TGW is a brilliant piece of work and shows the commercial side of JDB's musicmanship that is sometimes stifled by Wire's lyrics. Whilst i do like To see a friend in tears, Don't Look Back, which is one of my favourite songs ever, not just favourite Manics related song, would've worked better in the context of the album.

and as already discussed many of the B-Sides were of pretty good quality, so theres a whole set of material to dig into here.

surely the thread title is wrong? surely "the great western" should be replaced by "just about anything"

I love both albums so I'm not fussed.
