Who Really Turned 2 Into KYE?

EDiT: SORRY!! YOU CAN ONLY VOTE ONCE

Let's make a poll! Who do you think really swung the decision to put DTTR and Solidarity into a double album?
Record company having to shell out two albums? Manics fearful 3 singles from each might run dry their b-side wells? Both? Possible Environmental Documentary About Record Industry Carbon Footprint Triggering Guilt*?
None of the above played a factor?
*=But that stretches back to the MSP option doesn't it?

Poll incoming please hold
And fucked it up

I'm glad Sony are winning at time of writing. If only they'd say that to the Red Hot Chilli Pepper's!

They did, Stadium Arcadium was meant to be three seperate albums released six months apart.

I imagine it's a bit of both. Sony probably wasn't too keen on the idea and objected to it, but knowing the band they were likely second guessing themselves with every step anyway and were easily convinced to give up the draft plans.

Nothing stopped them releasing it as a two disc album ala mellancollie and the infinite sadness, especially off the back of the commercial success of EMG and TIMT. I think as others point out, they probably got cold feet and by they probably James and Sean who probably feared they'd look pompous and arrogant, and maybe considering the loose recording sessions, that the material didn't live up to warrant such an ambitious release. I do wonder if memories of the hype around GT played a part too in tempering their ambitions.

Thanks to the brilliant resource that is MSPedia, I was able to locate the issue of Q Magazine that I vividly remember from just before the album came out. There was one part that always stuck in my head, ever since I first read it, that told me not everybody was really on board with the direction of KYE:

The one remaining bone of contention is how
early they can get away with placing My Guernica,
a muscular, distorted rocker that, Wire concedes,
"Isn't going to go down very well on the Asda
racks." Moore, ever the perfectionist, thinks it
sounds too rough.
"It's like the Mary Chain," defends Wire.
"Yeah." Moore harrumphs. "And look how
many records they sold."
Wire grins. "Well, we're not going to sell any
records anyway."

To me, that spoke volumes. This was very much Nicky’s album and Nicky’s hang ups concerning their popularity and any perceived “selling out”.

I think the band was in a mess by KYE. They should have taken a break and dealt with the success, the money, and the guilt.

Plus the band have said in various videos that Sony have never interfered with any decision they've made, so shitting the bed and putting two albums into one was clearly them.

Maybe they wanted to do a Sandanista! type record but didn't have enough stuff for a triple album...

Maybe they saw KYE as their Use Your Illusion Parts 1 & 2

And TIMT as their Appetite for Destruction (the second attempt at)
