new richey projects

Dear All

My name is Rob Jovanovic, I'm a full-time writer based in Nottingham.

I have been commissioned by one of the UK's largest publishing houses, Orion Books, to write the complete story of the life and career to date of Richey Edwards.

I've written several books before including a biography of Kate Bush which did very well in 2005 and some projects close to my heart like the story of Big Star and the official book of Pavement in 2004. This isn't a quick off-the-cuff project by any means, it won't be published until 2009 and I've already been researching it for a while.

I'm in touch with Hall or Nothing regarding the band and Richey's family.

I'm currently looking for help with any of the items listed at the end of this post.

If you have any questions about this project please don't hesitate to get in touch, on this forum, by PM or email me at robj@innotts.co.uk

Many thanks for your time

Rob Jovanovic

What I'm looking for:

Written work:

I have all the standard magazines and music papers (NME, MM, Sounds, Vox, Select, Record Collector, etc) but any other less mainstream publications, especially if they have interviews from 1995 or earlier.

Copies (or originals) of Manics fanzines 1996 and earlier.

Contacts for fanzines and ex-fanzine editors

Newspaper reports (National, London and South Wales) from the aftermath of Richey's disappearance and later 'sightings'.

Music / Interviews:

Radio interviews 1995 and earlier

Demos from 1980s [1986ish?]

Demos from first three albums

Live shows up to end of 1994

Videos:

Video coverage of live shows 1994 and earlier, also interviews and features.

Obviously I have copies of YouTube footage, BBC's 'Manics Close Up', plus Clapham Grand 1994 and Oxford 1991.

Especially looking for a copy of the much maligned Channel 4 effort The Vanishing of Richey Manic.

People:
I have an interview list of dozens of people but am still looking for more.

1. I'm still looking for contact details for the following people:

Mitch Ikeda
Midori Tsukagoshi
Matt Olivier
Spike Edney
Richard Cottle
Chris D'Adda
John Cheves

2. Also,

Anyone who met Richey

Anyone who Richey wrote to

Anyone with unpublished photos of Richey.

Yes, I have a question,
why a(nother) book about him? And why now? I mean, so late?

hi conny

just to be clear, this is a book about the life of richey edwards, rather than a book about MSP. as far as i know there has never been a book about Richey.

as he's one of the most interesting figures in British music from the past couple of decades I think a book about his is due.

as for the timing, i hope that enough time has passed since his disappearance that more people will be willing to share their recollections of richey.

the aim is to reveal richey the person rather than richey the stereotyped 'cartoon' figure.

And Simon Price, more importantly!
Rob, you're probably gonna get some more sniping from our more suspicious forumites but ignore it, your book sounds like a very worthwhile and fascinating project, and you seem to be going about it the right way, in contrast to one or two other Manics books that shall remain nameless.
Richeysite is our (and probably the world's) leading Richey authority, and her, erm, Richey site http://www.richeyedwards.net/ is an amazing resource. Obviously you're gonna have to get her permission about using stuff and all that...

I recently posted these two threads of Manics stuff from Irish publications Hot Press and the Irish Times.

The HP one has a long Richey interview from 1993. You can register with these papers' sites fairly cheaply to search their archives for more relevant material.

If Richey was definitely deceased I wouldn't mind a book about him, but as he's 'missing' and his friends and family might still consider the matter up in the air I don't think a book without their permission would be very helpful.

Even if it was I can't see how you could do an accurate portrail without the batch of unseen lyrics Richey left behind, that must give some clue as to his mental state at the time of his disappearance.

With the restrictions you have I don't believe you can write the book you are setting out to achieve.

Because no one can let the man rest in peace. A statement that applies whether he is resting in death, or resting in an anonymous life somewhere no one can find him.
