Kieran Evans did a great job with the documentaries but when it comes to music videos he’s Patrick Jones with a bigger budget and nicer camera.

He doesn’t understand YouTube. I always find myself looking for the skip ad button at the beginning of his videos to get to the song before remembering that what I’m watching isn’t actually a tourist commercial.

It looks nice and everything but will achieve nothing for this song. Nothing positive at any rate.

Nicky has pretty much admitted his instructions to Kieran are "someone Asian walking around somewhere nice". Evans is limited in what he can do with no budget and Nicky's excuses for a weekend away...

I think it's beautiful, the best one of the videos, mainly for its quotes which are tremendous, but also for its framing of the shots and how it (at least tries) to get across some of the desperation in the song.

I remember the seeing the visuals of the lady singing the words at the Leeds gig. Would liked to have seen the band in the video a bit. It's nicely shot and I like the lady singing to herself on the video walls, but doubt it'll help achieve anything for the song on a wider audience. I think you're right Dancing Kirby about him being like Patrick Jones!
Oh, I spotted the band very briefly on the visuals on the screens

It reminds me of the slightly kooky videos you get in-between the ad breaks on Sunday Brunch

I think it’s amazing. Poignant, reflective and artful. Lots of wonderful visual connections to both the band’s history and the themes of both the song and the album. “widescreen melancholia” indeed.

I like it. If the band were in the video y'all would be moaning they're just hanging around not doing much like in the IB video

I would have at least had a post apocalyptic setting with the actress as an otherworldly visitor. That would have made a good link between the videos but they probably would have been compared to Muse.

I'm happy to say that it is artistic and not just consisting of the band or a random actor doing nothing

Y'know you're just not getting the hang of this Manics fan thing - hate everything they do on principle ....giggle.

I suspect they decided on the singles and shot all the vids on the same day I don't dislike it but I was hoping for some take on an 80s movie... Breakfast Club or something like the Indie said as the world burns down which it didn't in the film but anyway

I nearly always have totally different Manics videos in my head to how they turn out. But it's nice in a way, to have your imagined version that would never be quite the same if it turned into reality. Agh! There I go again being positive!

Porco ramble incoming. Just how I see it, feel free to ignore/regard me as 'reading too much into things' (I am used to it!)

One of the many things I like about this video is how it appears to be making reference to so much with so little. Take the 'triptych' of screens for example - the theme of reflection/self-realisation/awareness that pervades the album is possibly never more evident in the RIF videos than with these, to me. The actress (one Sarah Sayuri apparently, who is fantastic in these videos IMHO) is, I think, a kind of analogue or symbol for the band+themes of the album - you have the brief flickering images of her changing to James, Nicky and Sean, as well as the recurring image of her in the Samurai gear, obviously connecting her (and so the band) to the album cover's samurai. You have the umbrellas, reminiscent of the Motorcycle Emptiness video... ok, I'm still circling back round to the actual screens significance...

Obviously triptychs are not some invention of the Manics. But I think it's interesting, to me at least, to consider their use here. They call to mind the album covers of arguably the most important or pivotal moment of the band's career - between The Holy Bible and Everything Must Go - both albums with covers that feature a three-part image. The Holy Bible's Jenny Saville work Strategy (South Face/Front Face/North Face) has the figure from three perspectives, itself presumably used as symbolism of humanity looking at itself in the mirror, both ironically and non-ironically. Everything Must Go features the surviving members of the band (that is, remaining in the band) as its own kind of triptych.

So that's the past, the theme of memory. But then fast forward to now and you have this new analogue of Sayuri's 'character'/metaphor for the band looking at herself(/themselves) through the lens of the present too - and if you consider the colour scheme -the blue, the orange, the green, which are to me, very obviously at least connected to if not in direct reference to (or perhaps partly the cause of) the colours used for International Blue, Liverpool Revisited and Dylan & Caitlin singles artwork. Distant Colours' pink is missing... I wonder why? A visual pun? (The pink colours of that single are literally distant?! ). Either way, it seems quite cohesive to me, layered, thoughtful and deliberate.

Will it sell more albums/singles? I dunno. I don't really care, other than for the band's own satisfaction I guess. But I think it's a fabulous video regardless. I could go on, 'cos I see so much else in other things in the video (more on mirrors, reflection, broken things, the junk of the past, the sense of dislocation and bewilderment as to the direction of the future...) but I've possibly already sent people to sleep if they've read this far!
