Bass on Archives of Pain

Is it James or Nicky who plays the bass on Archives of Pain?

No disrespect to the Wire, but the studio version sounds too good to be played by him.

It's not that difficult. Dun dun dun dun dun dun dun, dun dun dun, dun dun dun.

And those 2 notes during the solo...

It was one of the first basslines I ever learnt. Not difficult at all. Even for Wire.

If I can play it, Nicky Wire can play it. (And I can, so he probably did)

There was an interview with Dave Eringa posted on here a couple of months ago, where he said Archives Of Pain was his favourite Wire bass playing, even though it wasn't one Eringa produced. I took that as evidence Nicky didn't play any of the pulsating basslines on GATS. Archives isn't very difficult.

Nicky isn't that bad, and certainly was competent enough by 1994. James wrote the Archives of Pain bassline though I seem to remember

Yeah, he certainly downplays his own ability. Fair enough he was a little sloppy (and drunk) in the early days, but he can play pretty well now (still drunk). Him and Sean are a pretty tight rhythm section.

His bass on the live THB tracks was brutal. See 4st7lb and Intense Humming off the 2004 CD set

It's funny really, some bands have a rhythm section and others just have a drummer and bassist. The Manics are definitely the latter, you could probably count on one hand the amount of times Nick and Sean have actually grooved. It's where the band's problems lie with trying to break out of the box, as they play the same lines on most songs.

Can't remember whether it was 2007 or 2004 (or maybe 2002?) when he started to play using just finger plucking - just using that technique coincided with him improving his playing ability.

The last two albums' eras have had some cool little bass moments that you just didn't get before from him in the past.

I'd argue that one of the best bits of PFAYM is the bass playing throughout, very much compliments the (somewhat dissapointing) guitar work.
