Manics on Vinyl

Having bought a decent record player a couple of months ago I've slowly but surely succumbed to the vinyl bug. I'd been buying vinyl singles for ages but now I've started buying certain albums that I already have on CD to see how they sound.

At the moment I own three Manics albums on vinyl - 'Know Your Enemy' (new pressing), 'Journal' and 'Postcards'. I also have the special 'National Treasures' selection that came with Q Magazine.

I find listening on vinyl to be a very different experience, and it's not always easy to predict which tracks will benefit.

I need to listen to 'KYE' again before commenting, but 'Journal' and 'Postcards' definitely benefit from being played on vinyl instead of digitally. 'Journal' has a depth of sound, making each pluck of a guitar string sound 3D, and the drums tend to come across more powerfully. In contract, 'Postcards' has so many layers of sound that the vinyl can bring out better than the CD.

Next I want to get the new pressing of 'This Is My Truth' as I think the format will make more of a difference than on 'Everything Must Go', especially on tracks like 'Tolerate', 'You're Tender And You're Tired' and 'S.Y.M.M'.

Anyone else here a vinyl junkie? What are your thoughts on how Manics albums sound on record compared to CD? Which albums do you think benefit the most?

If the remastered anniversary Genration Terrorists CD sounds as good as the original vinyl, that would do nicely.

Forever Delayed also sounds much better. Full length tracks too. Should have been a gatefold sleeve, though. JDB got a gatefold sleeve for his album.

Know Your Enemy was a waste of time. That was no surprise when it needed to be a double album. Eight tracks fitted on a single side of vinyl? Never going to end well. The re-release had the chance to put this right. Apparently, it didn't. I didn't bother to find out for myself.

This Is My Truth should also have been a double, really. It came out in an era when Oasis were afforded four sides for ten-track albums such as Standing On The Shoulder..

Lifeblood was a bad pressing. Rather muffled, if I remember right. I couldn't be bothered with anything after that.

Journal and KYE sound fantastic on Vinyl, Phil C. I think a lot of comes down to the fact both albums were recorded in a relatively lo-fi manner. Now, I'm not someone who knows much about the recording processes and technical elements but I can definitely feel the difference with those two albums as opposed to LB on Vinyl. Songs such as TJSS and Ocean Spray definately have a lot more layers to the sound. It sounds beautiful on Vinyl. I have ordered TIMTTMY (New Pressing) and it will be interesting to see how that sounds also.

Postcards is one I've only heard at a friends on Vinyl but that sounded quite cool too. I do love Vinyl but it is an expensive habit to form.

I need to actually listen to more of my Manics vinyl, still got a fair bit that I've not played and these days I don't have anything to play them on either. One day I wanna be able to say I've listened to every Manics thing I own that isn't sealed... I'm not sure if it's worth it though, it'd mean I'll have to listen to Autumnsong 12 times.

Just bought the 'Revol' 10 inch. Forgot that it has a different live track to the CD - 'Life Becoming A Landslide' instead of 'Love's Sweet Exile'.

What Manics records do you all own?

Is there a particular piece of Manics vinyl you'd really love to get next? Getting 'Revol' makes me want 'Faster/PCP' next, although I'd love to track down a version of 'Feminine Is Beautiful' but I doubt that will ever happen.

Oh, and the furry cover 'Lipstick Traces' obviously

Would definitely love Feminine is Beautiful but would also like the GT pic disc my girlfriend used to have before she decided to sell it on Ebay.
