Brando played the quintessential juvenile delinquent in The Wild One, it's one of his most famous roles.

Been puzzling this one for a while and that's the best explanation I've heard thus far, the only lyrics that don't seem to fit are those about not defending himself.

He didn't defend himself when he was beaten with a horsewhip by Liz Taylor.

I'm pretty sure that J.D. would refer to J.D. Salinger, another one of Richey's heroes along with Marlon Brando. He's made numerous references to Salinger across all his lyrics and was particularly focusing on Salinger around the time he disappeared (leaving one of his books behind in that box).

as far as what that has to do with the specific lyrics, anyone's guess is as good as mine....

Also a good one. I wonder why no one has asked the guys about that in an interview thus far. Okay, it's just a tiny little detail, but I'd still be interested.

Not sure about the JD Link, but the film referenced heavily is Brandos 'Reflections in a Golden Eye'. He took his wifes horse and fell off, beating it badly with the horsewhip in retalliation. On finding out, his wife takes revenge by lashing at Brandos character with the whip at a party.

it can't be a person I think, it's plural - so say Marlon J.D.

I really feel that when played live, the fans should sing...

"Saucy, Saucy...Bradfield...JD!"

If it Salinger that would certainly tie into the theme of simplicity of living.
