I wonder if SP is as close to the band as he thinks he is?

He'd say and do anything to make it seem like he is or ever was. Even if he is or was, there's no value in his obnoxious, ego filled drivel. He was an irrelevance at his peak; the best word to describe him now would be "who?"

Don't hold back, say what you really think!

Not sure what all this vitriol is about but he has said he's a journalist so never considered himself as their friend. I'm sure he has their contact details and they would take his call. He was on their tour bus for the one Southampton gig I went to...Bible tour maybe? Already forgotten.. I don't have a problem with him updating his book. You don't need to be close to someone to write a biography, they just need to be willing to talk to you.

100% you don't need to be close. In fact the best ones i've read are when the writer isn't close. The worst is when the writer wants to be close or worse thinks that they're close and they can't be objective so it ends up drivel.

Simon Price falls into this category. It's what fucked up 'Everything'. He's not alone though. Chris Salewicz was the same with his Joe Strummer biography and Paul Trynka with his Iggy Pop one.

It was only after reading 'Everything' that I realised that Simon Price was the person that i'd mistaken for an obsessed fan from the terrible "vanishing of richey manic" doc.

tbh I haven't read everything since I first got it on publication. Just remember liking it a lot. Praps I should read it again ...might end up like my re-read of Enid blyton ...from warm fuzzies nostalgia to oh god this is shit...teachers were right

I'd like a good biography please

I don't see that - in the book he (rightfully) puts the boot into the band quite a few times throughout.

He's also a big part of the reason they got coverage in their early careers and seems to enjoy guest status at their gigs from time to time.

The only thing I've ever wondered about him is if he has a day off from doing the hair thing - I'd love to see him putting out the bins on a Sunday evening!

You think SP is obnoxious, try reading Everett True's Nirvana book. He makes Simon look like Michael Palin.

I love Everything, and I don't know anything about Price aside from what he wrote there. I didn't see it as anything other than (or claiming to be anything other than) a journalist's perspective?

An enthusiastic yes from me!

Fully agree. It's by far the best biography of the band (not hard I guess) and Pricey is great on the Chart Music podcast so it's a firm yes from me too!
Would prefer a standalone sequel if I had the choice to be honest.

As far as i recall his criticisms of the band in the book are all things that he personally disagreed with, not objective criticisms. From everything i've ever read or seen of him (i mean seriously who turns up for a documentary interview about a missing person in full cult of richie regalia with 'Enolalone' written in marker on their face) he thinks he's part of the manics inner circle.

Check out this interview from the Everything Must Go Reissue. Lots of "in" references throughout and then when it goes to the track by track he commits one the cardinal sins of journalism, he answers the fucking question on behalf of the interviewee.

Quote:

REMOVABLES

JDB: Let's not even go there, with what that lyric's about...

OK, then I will. It's about impermanence and mortality, and in many ways is Richey foreshadowing the spirit of Everything Must Go in his own bleak way. And the reference to bronze moths dying easily is likely to be derived from Tennessee Williams' Lament For The Moths (“A plague has stricken the moths, the moths are dying/Their bodies are flakes of bronze on the carpet lying...” ), of which the Manics were on the record as being admirers. Of all the songs on Everything Must Go, it's the one which would have slotted seamlessly onto The Holy Bible.

The fact that 'Everything' is the best biography of the band only speaks of the shocking quality of the available biographies.

There is another Manics book coming out this year, I believe. But it's not really a biography.

I’d rather a follow up to Everything than another half assessed attempt at another Richey insight. I’d even buy it if there was chapter dedicated to tearing apart trashpiles like Withdrawn Traces.
