It says a lot when the b-sides are a hell of a lot better than the single itself!!!!!

The Vorticists is one of the best ever pieces of music put to record by the band, period. I don't listen to Autumnsong any more, except when I am forced to do so by the band at gigs. Gimme the Underdogs edit any day of the week!!

Autumn Song is the moment the band stopped believing they meant something and the moment they stopped caring about trying to make important songs and write meaningful lyrics. It's too shit to even be a b-side.

I don't agree. The band produced great songs after Autum Song.

Every major band produces a track/LP wich is not what their hardcore fans like. As a Queen fan, Queen II is imho the best LP ever made but that doesn't mean the have produced only shitty LPs after that. I even like some of the Hot Space album :-)

It's alright. There's no denying it's cheesy as all hell but I can enjoy it when I'm in the right mood.
Same goes for Underdogs, though neither is among the best material on SATT.

If you need a reason why "Autumnsong" is shit, just listen to Journal For Plague Lovers. That should clear things up for you.

every band wants to sell lots and lots of records, and that's fair enough, why else do it all if not for fortune and glory? however, the fact that the band felt compelled to turn themselves into Busted or McFly to do it made a number of people quite cross. time and again the band had made records that were undeniably the "Manics sound" and yet had crossed over to a huge audience, this was the point at which they said "let us change to direct huge audience appeal".

there's a fringe element that only want the band to write songs about depression, or indeed basically say "wooo, look at me, a big lanky streak of piss with a politics degree". the rather more healthy majority are happy to give what the band has to say a try, but don't want it to be them saying what they think people want to hear.

shit like Autumnsong and Your Love did, in great fairness, attract a whole whack of fans that would not have otherwise dabbled with the band at all, so fair dos to the song in that regard.

if that looks tl;dr, then the condensed version is "fucking tell us fucking what fucking baby has done to her fucking hair or fuck off with it Wire" is what we all would have hoped the rest of the band said when the demo was given to them.
I don't think thats true about your love alone at all. they do perform it with heart, and nicky and james seem to love it...it's a totally different kettle of fish to autumnsong.

I think I remember Nicky actually said to Phil Wilding at Laugharne (a couple of years ago) that YLAINE was the lyric he was most proud of writing, alongside the likes of ADFL and Tolerate etc. I'd never really class it as another 'throwaway' Autumnsong lyric as such.

Love the music, like the chorus, but the verse and overall sentiment is a bit silly

I have a soft spot for it. It's kind of funny, the bombastic music, the dumb lyrics "Baby what you done to your hair....your hair...your hair...your hair!" It's knowingly ridiculous. Plus not every song has to be very meaningful or have lyrics about "stillborn leper Christs" or whatever.

Not every Manics' song HAS the poetic depth of 4st7lb or the melodic brilliancy of SIS (imo), but the combination of cheesy music AND lyric is too much for me. The solo is excellent though.

No but it says a lot when the band clearly put more effort into the sodding b-sides. SATT is just a lazy album - "Indian Summer", "Winterlovers", "Autumnsong" - hardly being creative there with titles.

I think it's interesting it's been lumped with Your Love Alone - I'd say that's a song ostensibly doing the same thing (radio-friendly upbeat indie pop) in a completely successful and infinitely superior way. The lyrics are interesting and make a degree of sense, the music is catchy and deep enough for the context, and the song is sung and played with conviction. YLAINE is a great single which they can and should be proud of. The fact Autumnsong sits next to it in their discography makes the latter seem all the more pathetic by comparison; they'd just done that kind of song and absolutely nailed it, how they managed to strike so wide of the mark with the next single is a mystery.

And almost immediately afterwards they did similar on a different order of magnitude -the career highlight JFPL followed by Autumnsong: The Album...
