Navel gazing Lifeblood lyrics..

Morning all,
Just spent a nice happy hour with Lifeblood on repeat, and have been sucked into a single line, and it's turned into (yet again) looking too deeply into a lyric.

Cardiff Afterlife; "For I witnessed splendour, and evil that no one saw"
OK, we all know the song's about you know who, and the rest of it really needs no questioning, but what evil is Wire on about? Or am I just navel-gazing on a wet Tuesday morning?
Any thoughts people?

The evil is just simply what Richey was doing to himself with his various issues.

Yeah that's what I figured at first, but "no one saw"? The snag to that one is that Richey's "issues" weren't exactly hidden, what with 4REAL, Thailand, stints in rehab.

Probably referring to some more personal conflicts and things that were kept hidden/never surfaced outside the band's private quarters. I'd imagine that there's quite a lot we do not know about the guy.

As Nicky has said in various interviews he was the one who would get the phone call at 4 in the morning with Richey rambling on about something. Didn't he say he would go to his hotel room and put him to sleep as well. I'm sure Nicky saw a lot in those days. Really sad situation if you think about it.

Yeah. Sad situation indeed, how such bad times caused such explosive creativity, then took it away. That just reminded of another interview, I think on tour with Suede, that Sean quote "Richey doesn't go to bed, he goes to the abyss". True words in jest and all that, but cannot imagine how Nicky, or indeed any of them felt during all that.
