The only time I've ever considered his vocals anything less than perfect is on Out Of Time, I think he could've done that one a lot better.

....and play lead at the same time. It's a toughie!

I'd disagree with that but you're entitled to your opinion! James version of Out Of Time > The original version.

I was reading somewhere that he had so much on his plate at one point, he had someone in the wings operating his effects pedals for him!

Oh I'd certainly agree with that, I always thought the Chris Farlowe version sounded like it was sang by grandad Trotter. Their version of Umbrella is better than the original too.

Yes it is tough to play lead, sing and do your pedals at the same time, I think it was brought in to benefit the "show" so he could just concentrate on playing, so he does a great job. These days he has Wayne playing a great deal of the rhythm guitar so he can focus on pedal changes a load easier.

I really, really don't know how he does it. It seems magical to me. I mean, it takes a lot of practice and vast shovefuls of talent, of course, but it still astonishes me. (it was quite funny when he kept smoothing away his forelock and the guitar kept going... of course that was Wayne but it was as if his magical powers meant the guitar just played by itself by being near to him!).

Most of the changes are quite simple, it's just a case of lots and lots of practice really. For example in the studio you might have distortion, delay and phase on or something and then need to change them, it's working out which foot to use and how quickly you can make the change to make it sound seamless. Lots of concentration for James, especially if he's got a difficult line to sing.

Oh no absolutely, I appreciate that! I can barely manage one pedal at a time and I don't even sing lead!

I heard someone used to manage his pedals for him, but he does it himself these days I think.
