1) Send Away The Tigers.
2) Everything Must Go.
3) Futurology.
4) The Holy Bible.
5) Journal For Plague Lovers.
6) Generation Terrorists.
7) Rewind The Film.
8) Lifeblood.
9) Postcards From A Young Man.
10) Gold Against The Soul.
11) This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours.
12) Know Your Enemy.

Quite difficult to judge exact positions but roughly about the area. Very much personal taste this one but I actually in someways like the Manics best when they've embraced being a 3 piece (hence the top 3). The Richey heavy albums follow before moving onto the slightly overlong GT.

7-9 I can't really fault majorly but just don't like them quite as much. It's only the bottom 2 I think have really bad tracks on them, TIMTTMY has My Little Empire and KYE has some good tracks but mostly felt very hollow and uninspired.

Overall I think the Manics are best when they don't try and force something but go with what they want to do at the time. The only era I believe they didn't do that was KYE and hence it's at the bottom as even the noel b-side I love from that era is Fear Of Motion.

Don't know why I'm posting this other than feeling bloody-minded about defending Lifeblood (& inserting GW) & dissing Futurology which I consider to be an 'interesting but short-lived' phase...

1) Lifeblood
2) The Great Western
3) The Holy Bible
4) Everything Must Go
5) Gold Against The Soul
6) This Is My Truth...
7) Rewind The Film
8) Send Away The Tigers
9) Know Your Enemy
10) Journal For Plague Lovers
11) Postcards
12) GT
13) F
14) IKTZ

In fact the more I think about it...other than the fact that ALL the JDB solo tracks (including B Sides) are in musical terms fantastic, it's the lyrics that seal the deal for me.

Don't get me wrong - I love & appreciate the depth & complexity in Richey & Nicky's lyrics but JDB's have an immediacy (made up word?) & simplicity that I find very engaging (they're also easier to remember!)

Superb / good / decent enough / no

I would write reasons for each album but I'm not sure I have them. Is this the lowest placing of THB so far? I never got the hype for the album, good as I think it is. Some nice post-punk influenced songs, some of James's best melodies, but it never really had that gut punch a lot of people got from it. In general my lower placing of the Richey albums maybe comes from the fact that I never went through a teen angst phase at all. I don't really like angry, angsty stuff much. I can't relate to it. The richly melodic sculptures of my favourite Manics albums are the sort of things I've liked since I first started listening to music aged 10. My top five are certainly the lushest of the band's albums, other than PFAYM, which sits so low because it hasn't actually got any songs on it, just an annoying noise. To this day I can only remember how It's Not War and Some Kind of Nothingness go. SATT is the only Manics album I've never owned and probably never will, unless I find a cheap copy of the Japanese 2CD edition with the b-sides on. It took me years to even bother listening to it. I think I was just rebelling because Nicky had said in an interview that they were going to go even more electronic after Lifeblood (which got me excited) and then they went the other way. Important lesson learned: never trust anything Nicky says, ever.

Lots of bands do different things throughout their careers, but what makes the Manics so enduring is how well they seem to do them. The variation in the lists here shows they managed to create an album of harrowingly bleak catharsis, do trashy glam leopard print riffing, and create lush, crafted pop albums - all well enough that they gain the love and respect from people of possibly greatly different tastes. TIMT and Lifeblood are genuinely loved by some people (I know a fair few synthpop fans who think Lifeblood is a masterpiece), rather than simply failed experiments. It's why I'll happily follow the band despite the occasional album that makes me want to bleach my ears.

It gets harder and harder... Top three and bottom two are consistent for me...

1) The Holy Bible
2) Journal For Plague Lovers
3) This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours

11) Postcards From A Youngman
12) Send Away The Tigers

Love em so much, got Lifeblood on at the minute, amazing that this is the same band that did Gold Against The Soul. 4-10 changes all the time depending on my mood, time of year etc. Sometimes I go off an album for a while and get that nice feeling of rediscovery when I go back to it, I like that.
