Despite the fact that he does have a point. I love the Manics and I like Ocean Spray, but the latter purely for the trumpet and sentimental value. And it's very true that LORN is essentially the simply-structured, formulaic pop/rock song that James and Sean (don't forget the short one) had gotten so used to writing by the time the 2000s rolled around. What makes LORN worse though is the cheap synthesiser trying to signify some sort of 'new direction' when nothing had changed in reality.

Most people know that my opinion of TLORN is that it's the worst song the Manics have ever written. But that doesn't mean I agree with Kirby that the Manics have been crap ever since then. SATT has good stuff on it and I adore JFPL.

This thread has got the TLORN going through my head so thanks for that!

I enjoy listening to TLORN and its eerie, melodic moodiness - suits the theme of the song. Not my favourite on Lifeblood and there were much better options for singles I feel, though I think people who prefer other Manics eras do tend to pick on it needlessly.

That was the first time I heard ASFD (on Jools Holland), and I thought it was really good. Luckily, they played it the first night of the tour in Brighton - I dunno why they dropped it, it was one of the songs from Lifeblood that actually worked really well live.

Especially as they claimed it was their favourite song on the album. Couldn't Nicky play the bass on it consistently?

^That is the single most embarassing thing the Manics have ever been involved in
I've got some skewed memories now.. I remember seeing A Song For Departure but I don't remember seeing The Love Of Richard Nixon. Be a wonder if they even remember performing it, they look so bored. I'll be surprised if they perform it ever again.

They'll perform it on the Lifeblood 20th Anniversary tour, where they'll play every song off the album of course.

Don't get me excited, this had best happen.

I wouldn't go so far as to say everything they've done since TLORN has been crap. If it's average, I'll still moan. Hell, if it 7/10 decent, I'll still voice my disapproval! But my overriding feeling is that the next Greatest Hits from them is going to have a pretty much identical tracklist to the one released in 2002. YLAINE will get on there at the expense of SWSS, but that's about it for seven years' worth of releases.

Back to the main topic, the Jools performance is the least embarrassing of the TLORN TV outings. That close-up of Nixon yawning in the middle of the TOTP performance surely can't be an unfortunate coincidence on the director's part!

I suspect we may have to put a Manics tribute together in order to achieve it. I can be Nicky as I'm quite tall, can talk bollocks, have a stupid haircut and can't play the bass.

I know someone with a pet mole that can play the drums, that'll do for Sean but James might be difficult.

If someone asked me to do an impression of this "fan" forum, I'd quote this.
