Actually they have some vision when they make an album, they follow it and it could happen that a song is good but end as a b-side because it's not fitting the concept. Moreover please don't forget they recorded new songs for b-sides in between two albums (this is a case of Donkeys and Comfort Comes which are better than whole GATS but they didn't exist at the time of GATS recording)

And there's another thing - good example is Comping Up by Suede - commercional songs on album, great moody songs on b-sides (Europe is Our Playground, This Time...)

Agree Donkey.. just cos a song is a b-side doesn't make it inferior. B-side compilations (a rare breed soon) wouldn't sell. Oasis Masterplan is another example of b-sides better or equal to a-sides.

Oasis are another band that have recorded some absolutely outstanding b-sides.

Lipstick Traces is a decent collection of b-sides too, but there's so many to choose from, it will always be hard to pick everyone's favourites. The band themselves do a disservice to them as they never get played live, when they really should get an airing.

Yes indeed, I talked to Sean once and asked him what's the possiblity they would ever play Just a Kid live and he said: "maybe we'll tour Lipstick Traces one day" and I replied "oh, but that's not very likely, right?" and he only said who knows? but they somehow toured LT in 2003 a bit.

I think it's a shame Manics still pretend to be a big original band whereas they only release bad albums full of Nicky's music. I wish they made gigs like Suede with their album nights and this kind of things. And b-sides FD voting and then a gig. aaaaaaawww

Lets not forget also that tolerate was going to be a B-Side and Be Natural the lead single. Be Natural, personally, is the better song.

Fuckin' wholeheartedly agree with that comment! Never liked Tolerate. Be Natural is a brilliant song that's in my list of top 20 MSP songs.

Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong! Tolerate is amazing and Be Natural is duller than dishwater!

I always thought the verses to Be Natural were very draggy/weak.

It simply cannot compete with Tolerate lyrically/originally (seemed to capture a slice of the times), the electric piano in the verses is genius.
