For what it’s worth, James has usually played the riff live at the very start of NSAF only, with the rest being done by keyboards in the years before Wayne Murray. The part where he apologised in Belfast is the part where he’s always hammered into the chords instead of playing the riff:

Extremely disappointing to see annoying session musicians
I'd rather see good old trio fucking up lyrics and music than others playing/singing. Anywho I hope everything (healthwise and everything else) will be ok <3

Honestly, it's about time to give Naysmith and Murray official band member status. They've paid their dues and are now an essential part of the sound and stage show. Time for their songwriting to be finally recognised on the official credits as well.

Amazingly and for this reason, Ronnie Wood is still not a Stones shareholder, nor the chap who's been their bass player since the 90s.

While we're at it, bring back the guitar solos that replaced trumpet parts on songs like Kevin Carter and Ocean Spray

While we're at it, bring back Guy Massey. 2004/2005 was the pinnacle of the band's live sound.

I'm surprised that it hasn't been mentioned yet but, I have an even bigger problem with the use of backing tracks. I think they started using them for the Lifeblood tour, and look how well those songs went down live. There seems to be too much over an over reliance on them on this most recent tour and the levels are often too high in the overall live mix. This was especially true for IB, HMLAH and PGI.
I don't like seeing JDB doing less as I grew up watching MSP live where all the only guitar you heard was his. But he's almost 50 now, so perhaps this has influenced his decision to relinquish some of his responsibilities. Some popular bands of a similar genre like Foo Fighters and Arctic Monkeys seem to be growing in numbers onstage as they get older as well and I just think it looks daft. I think having the 3rd guitarist onstage with MSP was starting to take the piss. For me, the whole part of the live experience shouldn't always be about perfectly recreating how the songs sound on record. If I wanted that, I would just listen to the CD. What I want to see/hear is a more stripped back/alternative live take on how the songs could be interpreted. But with the extra, extra guitarist and the overbearing backing tracks it all seems very anodyne to me and it just isn't very exciting. Last edited by burnleybassman; 13-06-2018 at 11:16. |

Yeah, but I suppose the reasoning is if without a backing track now and again it might falter and not provide value for money?
If there are going to be three guitarists on stage then at least reinterpret the songs seeing as the musicianship has increased enough to accommodate. I don't begrudge click tracks, they'd need it. And I suppose it's cheaper than touring with an Orchestra. |
