Why do the manics not 'do' encores?

As far as i'm aware they never do them. or have once or twice, but not of their choosing. I'm thinking the Blackwood BBC gig, they 'finished' with A design for life, then did a couple more.

Is there a reason for it, or just tradition?
I'm sure it's something every uber-fan should know, but I don't. not that i'm claiming to be one.

I always thought the way Nicky and Sean return to the stage after James's acoustic spots wer the closest they get to an encore?
But that means we get shorter gigs so...
I've forgotten the real reason. Maybe his voice wouldn't pack up if they had a five minute break then came back?
But it is funny seeing people who've never seen them before going "Come on? COME ON!" for a few seconds as the lights come up.

The Manic Street Preachers, the closest thing we've got to a sci-fi alien race at a war they've been fighting for so long they've forgotten what they were fighting for.

I never noticed that they didn't which is probably really unobservant and thinking about it, I don't remember them doing one the three times I've seen them.

I think this is a good thing, it's a bit of a waste of time to do the whole pretending to finish then coming back on thing. Might as well just get on with it and play all the songs.

It is really indulgent, and complete pantomime. I wouldn't be surprised if they started doing them more often.

I'm glad they don't, it means I can get the 11 o clock bus home. I always thing encore's are a bit self indulgent. I can imagine groups/singers backstage getting errections on the loudness of the stamping and clapping

James has said they don't believe in it, just seems fake to come back after the climax and give out the usual lines. I recall hearing about an encore they did in '91 or '92 that went horribly wrong, so after that, they hardly ever did them.

Encores aren't spontaneous which is why they're so fake. The gigs would finish the same time, they'd just go off sooner. Not sure if bands that do 2 or 3 encores plan those but the first one is always factored into the set.

That's how i understand it anyway. I've only been to gigs where bands have been well received so aside from the manics there's always an encore

The amount of songs are usually around the same with other groups but you have that 10 minutes of waiting for them to come back on which means I always miss the bloody bus!!

I have seen a few genuine encores in my time. One guy was actually walking off the stage and someone shouted "Sit back down", so he did. Most of the setlist was requests to begin with.

Indeed, you'd have thought the Manics would have been well into it.

Lol, yes indeed, it would give Nicky some time to freshen up his makeup and change out of his sweaty boxers

Encores suck. It's just an excuse for a band to milk more applause.
