Masses Against the Classes

Nice video released with James talking about the writing of Masses Against the Classes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zYP7MOpjXM

Definitely in my top 5 Manics singles. Just a great time to be a Manics fan. Remembering listening to the first play or one of the first plays on Lamacq on Radio 1 and just being blown away.

The CD was cool as fuck. Close My Eyes is an AMAZING b-side.

I just really want to know why they now sing "The Massssssses Against the Classes, Baby" in the last chorus when they do it live. What is the "baby" a nod to?

When it came out I thought the lyric was “The Manics - I can’t stop clapping”

Saw this yesterday, nice video I have always loved the millenium gig performance, it rocks. The actual recorded version can't match that and the end part kind of grates on me a little. I've seen a few decent live versions, from one t in the park in 2008 was a great one, I remember buying internet time in a cyber cafe while backpacking around Australia and watching that performance a few times with my limited internet time haha Good times. There's also the 'circus comedy' version from 2001 in Germany I think it was and Naysmith is... stealing the show, shall we say haha, it's so bad.

Does anyone know if this is part of a longer thing ? I'd happily pay good money (even to the Times If needs must) to see JDB talk about this in depth.

I absolutely love the Masses single. I'd got into them properly as the TIMT singles were being released, so this was the first one that I'd been really waiting for and it was super exciting getting it. Close My Eyes is indeed a brilliant B-side - possibly one of my favourite Manics songs.

I always enjoy that addition... I guess it was just them messing about and playing up to musical cliches about throwing the word baby into songs and seeing where it worked and it was also not appropriate.

Pleased to see the love of close my eyes here, that crunchy sounding b-side has always been a favourite of mine.

Great video I'd like to see the full version of. Maybe when the album's released etc.
Oh but Close My Eyes is wonderful. I'd take an album full of that anyday.
So glad it made it to Lipstick Traces.
