I'm sure some I the usual suspects will be on slagging it!
If they do it will prove to me once and for all they have an agenda and really shouldn't bother posting on a band they don't likes forum - because if they don't like this they will never be happy.

EPIC!!!

I was up all night listening to it again and again (after I'd decided I wouldn't be able to wait 12 hours or so for the shops to open after all). I'm not a huge fan of "Futurology" and "Walk me to the Bridge" (yet?), but everything after that is brilliant (including CD2, i.e. the demos). At first I was a bit... I don't know... not really disappointed... confused, maybe? It is a very strange album in a way, don't you think? It's not what I was expecting, that's for sure; I don't really know WHAT I was expecting, though; maybe an "edgier", more industrial sound? More Holy Bible? Not this, anyway. I'm sure we'll be able to listen to this album for a long long time and still discover something new each time, some details we'd missed before.

The only thing I'm not sure I'll ever get used to are all the references to Germany/all the German bits and pieces; a) because James pronounces them in such a weird way, and b) it doesn't always make sense. "I am the Sturm und Drang, I am the Schadenfreude"?!? When I actually figured out what he was singing there, my first reaction was something like this: Then I had to laugh. A lot. Because I'm mean. And because, well, I am the Schadenfreude, too, hehe! Also, "Europa" will probably be skipped more often than not, I just don't like Nina's voice and the part of the lyrics she sings. But I suppose those are just some minor details that people who don't speak German probably won't mind.

I really don't know how to describe this - I'm feeling a mixture of relief, hysteria, awe and surprise, haha! I'd so gotten used to defending the Manics for songs/albums I wasn't entirely convinced of myself, ever since Lifeblood really, but this one I'll be very comfortable defending with all my heart - if it should be necessary at all.

Okay - initial thoughts:

I'd say there are two tracks that don't sit well on the album and listening to them in the context of the others is a bit jarring, those being Divine Youth and SPLAM. Divine Youth should have been a b-side or on RTF in place of 4 Lonely Roads and SPLAM would have been perfect for the 2nd half of Postcards.

Hearing some of the tracks I had reservations with originally (Futurology, Let's Go To War), my opinions have changed somewhat. Futurology sounds a little better than it did when I heard it on the radio rip and the same with Let's Go To War. They're good songs but fortunately the 2nd half of the album is extremely strong (from Black Square onwards).

Must give an honourable mention to the bonus tracks - these tracks are very strong, not sure how close they were to being on the album but a couple of them definitely deserve to have been on it. The Last Time I Saw Paris was extremely confusing at first but I absolutely love it. The French female vocal works well and you can see that they must have spent a LOT of time on it, as it's very detailed and atmospheric. If this is the sort of thing that the band are going to do in terms of a film soundtrack, then bring it on!!!!!!!!

Empty Motorcade is also a brilliant track, definitely should have been on the album (as with The Sound of Detachment).
