Editing of o2 Tracks

Has anyone else noticed how the o2 tracks have clearly been edited to remove any mistakes made on the night?

For example: When the lead guitar in It's Not War comes back in after the 2nd chorus, James clearly fucked the 2nd riff up on the night, yet on the official recordings, it's been replaced by the version he played perfectly in the intro.

We've also lost quite a lot of what James said at the end of Design For Life, which personally for me helped show just how much he enjoyed the gig and how great it was.

Is anyone else being bugged by this? Or just me? haha. Personally i think they should leave the recordings exactly how they played them on the night.

next to no live albums are released without overdubs and editing. it's one of the reasons the Manics have always been against them.

even the most celebrated live album of all time, Live At Leeds by The Who, was a painstakingly edited combination of elements from two gigs - a bass line borrowed from this show added to a vocal from that, and some of it clearly lifted all together from the Hull gigs, as revealed with the release of "Live At Hull" set a while ago.

the worst i ever heard was probably Simple Minds Live In The City Of Light. bar the intro and outro, practically every track is just the studio version overdubbed.

Not to forget, and also heavily edited
- the solo in Nixon
- the intro to There By The Grace Of God
- the start of the solo in Revol.

They sound perfect now :-)

Where can we find Design for Life and Its not war by the way?

No-one dare mention it in the Emerald Isle but the album that is often lauded as the greatest live album of all time - Thin Lizzy's Live and Dangerous - is full of overdubs. In a strange Manics' link, the producer of the album was Tony Visconti and he said that the album was "75% overdubs".

sometimes it's vanity, other times it's "we have to deliver a live album, it's in the contract, and these tapes are FUBAR".

Frampton Comes Alive is another good example. the only 100% genuine live recordings out there are bootlegs.

on that note, i always thought it was ace that artists like Springsteen had a section in the crowd set aside for bootleggers, and the likes of Bowie and Led Zep never actively stopped bootleggers doing their gigs. Led Zep were legendary for going to stores looking for bootlegs of specific gigs they did!

Just a reply to say I'm loving your blogpost on all the confectionary in your part of the world. As an Irishman currently living in a country that has no appreciation of good chocolate this is better than porn for me right now! Muchas gracias!

Oh and edit to say I now exclusively drink Nescafe Café Colombiano (as it is called here) because of your blog! Love it! (the blog that is!)

as soon as the UK Government says it is OK for me to come home with my wife (they seem to be of a mind i and the boys should come alone), i will be taking a trip over to see you, my friend. we can have a cup of it and listen to bootlegs!

someone has decided to send me chocolates from another part of the world to do a similar blog post on, belive it or not. as long as they make it through the postal system they will be eaten and written about!

Especially with It's Not War, there was probably no real reason to edit it, other than for perfections sake. It's ropey, but hardly a disaster. However this is the nature of live albums. Most of them do need a mix here and there but as long as they don't add in stuff that never happened, then that's relatively cool I guess.

Was very disappointed by this. That anecdote was one of the highlights of the night IMO.

This happens alot, some gigs like Muse's Harrp CD from 2007 its like they are playing to 2,000 people when it was 72,000 in terms of the crowd noise etc
