Do you realize this could look like a racist comment?

Well upon reading the track by track reviews it was 30 Year War that I got my hopes up for most, and fucking hell it's great. Had various tracks on a few times now and felt a bit indifferent at first with a couple of them. Will have to give it a while to get used to but I don't think Rewind The Film really fits with the rest of their discography. Maybe the three guest vocals have something to do with it, doesn't really feel like a Manics album to me yet. I mean... I think it's a lot easier to join the dots between the first three albums and their b-sides than the last three. It's not a criticism, I just feel like this one's came out of nowhere, it's different for them. I like it.

I think the best way to listen to RTF is to go in without the baggage of what they've done before; just listen to it as an album, not as a Manics album.

And skip SMTW, obviously

Yeah, in its own right it's great. Loving 30 Year War, Builder Of Routines and I Miss The Tokyo Skyline so far.

I'm full of shit anyway, This Is My Truth, Know Your Enemy and Lifeblood sound like three different bands.

Re: 30 Year War

It took them 10 years but I'm glad they finally found some lyrics for Everything Will Be that aren't about combing hair.

My initial impressions from what I've heard so far are:

- Show Me The Wonder sticks out like a sore thumb in comparison to the other album tracks. Good choice of single, though.
- 4 Lonely Roads should never have been included on a Manics album, and it is terrible. And I'll say it again, the piano reminds me of Everybody's Changing by Keane. UGH.
- Manorbier, while a great instrumental (with the best production values of any MSP instrumental) should have been elbowed to the b-side of a single. I do find it a little repetitive as well.
- 30 Year War is awesome but the second half of the song is lyrically clunky compared to the fluid first half. Killer bassline, love the synth overkill on the song. Reminds me of Red Rubber/Secret Society. Next single, I hope.
- This Sullen Welsh Heart is beautiful, one of the very best collaborations they've ever done. Love the intro. Really looking forward to hearing this live.
- Running Out Of Fantasy is a lot better than I had anticipated. Nice little acoustic guitar solo towards the end, shame there aren't more moments like that on the album.
- Tokyo Skyline sounds weird in places, and I can't place my finger on why..... and I don't like the chorus much. You can do a stupid little jig to it. One of the weaker tracks.
- Builder of Routines is awesome but the first few notes of the French Horn solo are identical to the one on God Only Knows. People have been sued for less. Strange JDB vocal in places as well.
- 3 Ways To See Despair is brilliant, a standout track. The song reminds me of George Harrison in a strange way, particularly the solo.
- Anthem For A Lost Cause - fucking love it. Love the horns, very melodic.
- As Holy As The Soil - not bad, a good Wire effort with excellent backing vocals from James. Amazing how far he's come since Wattsville Blues vocally.
- Rewind The Film - Good song, JDB's bits are brilliant. Not too keen on the Axelrod bits any more.

Is three full listens enough to declare something a masterpiece? Perhaps a little soon, but I think this is going to end up alongside EMG, THB and Lb as my favourite four Manics albums. I think Toyko Skyline is my favourite track right now, but really I can't even choose after that, and perhaps unlike most people I even think SMTW is improved and works really well in the context of the album, as does the title track.
