I think you're coming at this from the wrong angle Tim. It's not about how 'Welsh' the music is. The candidates simply have to be Welsh. That's it.

The Manics sing about Wales in Ready For Drowning anyway.

ready for drowning is about that welsh town or village that was flooded to build a reservoir wasn't it?

No, I realise that, it's more of a tangent....I just think because welsh culture, and language and art is kinda caught up in what it means to be welsh as I see it, surely bands which sing in welsh, or are more 'welsh' than the manics are more deserving of a welsh prize...if that makes sense.

They are Welsh and it's a Welsh music award. Doesn't say that they have to sing in Welsh. They're still part of Welsh culture.

Though the bonus disc did have Chwyrlio, which was in Welsh!

Depends on the album really, if you were a bit savvy and noticed the R.S. Thomas quote on 'This is My Truth Tell Me Yours,' coupled with the fact that the title is a quote from Nye Bevan you might strongly suspect that the Manic's were a Welsh band. And in a subtle way they do sing about Wales in the sense that a lot of their songs are reflections on being brought up in a Welsh town with a distinctly Welsh set of values/political beliefs etc. But in general, I take your point

Once again I see your point, but in terms of Welsh culture, the Manic's have arguably had a far larger impact than any of the bands nominated. As a Welsh speaker I'm glad there are Welsh language bands on the list but those bands will always have a limited appeal. Anyway, these days there are a multiplicity of Welsh identities and I'm not sure its fair to say the rural Welsh speaking identity is 'more Welsh' than the Manic's own Valley Welsh identity (if that makes sense.)

True...it seems to me at least, though, that they didn't really embrace being welsh until the later half of the 90s...

But that was just the common thing amongst youths to want to get aware from your 'insular town/village' whatever. The wanting to return to Wales (In James' case at least! Nicky never left and Seans not too far away!) is a sort of Welsh thing, no?

yea aside from Richey's quote that if there was a museum in Blackwood it would be full of rubble and shit, James has said that the reason they wanted to get away was because they had no support from the welsh music scene. That might have been cos they were slagging all the bands off tho'

If we're debating Welshness then don't forget that the Mercury (for British and Irish acts) once went to Antony And The Johnsons.

Some good albums on there. Love the Y Niwl, Sweet Baboo and Gruff Rhys albums.
