You can hear echoes of lifeblood and futurology in it but I think the two tracks are stellar. I also half love this being the initial release, hopefully bodes well for interesting album tracks. I tend to enjoy the manics output even when it varies in quality but this is beautiful

There'll Come a War is the most exciting Manics (related) single I've heard since The Love of Richard Nixon.
Gorgeous, stately, august, ominous, historic. Unbelievably cool soundscape. Like a very grown up Everyone Knows No One Cares. This is even better an advance from the Lifeblood sound than Futurology for me. This is the single I've wanted the Manic Street Preachers to release these past 16 years. The other track, the instrumental is great too. |

Love these two tracks. I think I liked them instantly but REALLY like them. The instrumental is my favorite of the two, but I really like there’ll come a war too.

I'm a bit late to the party because I wanted to give it a proper and well deserved listen.
James is a genius.

I'm not sure if I'm not 'getting it' and maybe more listens it will finally click but neither track is resonating with me at the moment. There'll Come A War sounds like it wants to build up to a crescendo but cannot gain any traction - maybe that's the point I'm missing, but I can't invest in it. The instrumental is a nice meandering ditty but not getting any 'hairs on end' moments here. I'm hoping to cling on to the other tracks when we hear them - maybe he's saved the best for the album! The Great Western was James allowing his other passions to get involved but you still had great melodies - Still A Long Way To Go is a classic example of what JDB can pull off when finding a cracking chorus. Granted, you could argue the entirety of the album had the standard Manics hallmarks and I guess that's what JDB wants to remove himself from here. TGW part II would be fine with me though! |

There'll Come a War... before the singing starts sounds like the theme for a post-apocalyptic series of Blackadder. JDB seemed to nick the motif for the chorus too. There'll-come-a-war... Black-a-adder...
Continuing a proud MSP tradition of "Doesn't that sound a bit like...?"

I love the eerie atmosphere of There'll Come A War.
Seeking The Room With The Three Windows is good, too.

I really can't wait to hear the rest of the album. I just hope the rest of it's as artistically indulgent as this, and Three Windows. |

Damn, first time listening to There'll Come A War on good headphones and my desktop setup and DAMN! This thing sounds absoutely colossal. Best low frequencies since Lifeblood definitely, just absolutely 10/10 sound, the sense of space, the mix, everything -- James's voice makes more sense with headphones too, only problem with this mix is, it needs good low frequencies for his voice to really shine, since he goes low, Richard Nixon style. Which it does, with the gear I'm using now.
Just absolutely stellar, stellar piece of music. This is f-n IT for me, Manics wise, this is why I'm along for the ride, and have been all these years. The sense of history, the distant, cold yet incredibly idealistic view of man kind. The Latin America / Wales connection (via Patagonia, Ready For Drowning etc) is also a very striking aesthetic combination for me. It's these high concept esthetic combos, like the clearly inspired-by-music-of-the-Andes grandeur of that "San-tia-go" part of the melody, in a cold Joy Division type production -- this is Manics at their absolute best for me. Combining unintuitive aesthetics and pulling them off with stately class. Also, I've seen a chilean communists cry when they listen to Jara. This was a special guy and they tortured him to death. What that still means to people there, and for the workers' movement in general -- this is an exceptionally weighty topic and it's handled superbly in this track. As a little tip for the people here who said they're struggling with the track musically -- I heard someone complain the chorus is inert and doesn't do anything? Exactly, that's the point. It's this super tight, dry repetition of a simple and slightly unemotional melody in what is otherwise a rather opulent melodic setting. There's an austerity to it, a purposeful rigidity, it's un-elastic and frozen, like a threat pushed through the teeth. A statement of fact. It specifically follows off some very pretty chord change embellishing melodic turns, as a kind of mute admission. Enjoy it, in, I don't know... the way you enjoy post punk, you know. |
