making a manics "best of" for a newbie

my fiance was converted into a fan at the toronto show and he wants me make him a cd but i don't know where to start.
if you had to make a "manics for dummies" (for lack of better analogy) cd, what would you put on it?
keep in mind that anything too out there (i.e. ballad of the bangkok novotel) or too mellow (i.e. ocean spray) might lose the person's interest.

thanks guys

I think Motown Junk has to be there, but I wouldn't know what your 'Out There' scale is like.

And I would use EMG-songs most sparingly.

i was thinking of including:
  • suicide alley
  • motown junk
  • you love us
  • love's sweet exile
  • repeat
  • slash 'n' burn
  • motorcycle emptiness
  • little baby nothing
  • from despair to where
  • la tristesse durera (scream to a sigh)
  • yes
  • this is yesterday
  • a design for life
  • kevin carter
  • if you tolerate this your children will be next
  • you stole the sun from my heart
  • there by the grace of god
  • send away the tigers
  • autumnsong

anything i'm missing?
i'm purposefully leaving off key THB songs because they are MY songs dammit

If they are songs you enjoy and recommend wholeheartedly, go for it.

Pretty good list you've got going there - I was going to do an intro comp. for someone else, myself, so this thread will come in handy. What about something from JFPL? "Peeled Apples"!

well maybe for starters try with Forever Delayed (kinda like a MSP greatest hits) and then maybe starting him off with the earlier stuff and the new album.

I hope I was a wee bit helpful

forever delayed was first album i bought (i was living in tokyo when i discovered the manics for myself and the display for forever delayed drew me in) and i wanted to make something a little bit more comprehensive for my partner as he's familiar with the FD songs already
but it was a really really good suggestion! thanks

imo, compilations still have to answer a standard of 'good'. Doesn't mean you should go overboard with your preferences, but Forever-Delayed style compilations aren't for anyone and everyone, either.

That's a brilliant one! I would have swapped around a couple (and I can't stand Second Great Depression) but it's a good 'un all the same!

This was the one I'd made for my parents (unfamiliar with the Manics except for me hollering about them all the time ) a couple weeks ago to listen to and it went over quite well! More of a favorites than best thing, though, and The Holy Bible tracks at the US Mixes because I like them better and I think they sound more 'accessible', too:
1. Archives of Pain
2. Marlon J.D.
3. Love's Sweet Exile
4. Die In The Summertime
5. Judge Yr'self
6. Black Garden
7. Stay Beautiful
8. Faster
9. To Repel Ghosts
10. Nobody Loved You
11. Motorcycle Emptiness
12. She is Suffering
13. Peeled Apples
14. Slash n' Burn
15. Vision Blurred
16. You Love Us
17. Bored Out of My Mind
18. Fragments
19. From Despair to Where
20. Close My Eyes

If they like old school era pop you might want to consider including "So Why So Sad".
