People critising Vivian's chorus
People seem to be critising Vivian's chorus for being too repetitive but I don't seem to see the same criticism for it's sister song 'A song for the sadness'. Just wondering why this is?

My problem isnt so much the reoetativness, more the tonal shift from the verses. And, its jusr kind of, cheesey??
A song for the sadness dosnt seen anywhere near as corny musically, and for whatever reason dosnt bother me as much. |

Uhm... Repetitive?
It's a chorus, duh... No, my remark would be that the chorus feels kind of incomplete. As there were supposed to be some missing lyrics, but then, again, that effect alone could be an interesting artistic statement, so I don't complain. Doesn't sound bad either.

With the lack of words, perhaps people are inspired to find the negatives in the situation

The chorus is the weakest part of A Song For The Sadness as well.

I like it. Very simple chorus of just "oh Vivian" but so what, the band don't usually do songs like this, and I like the guitar too.

Yep, thats my problem with it. Even more pronounced in the demo which sounds like a haunting TIMTTMY-esque piano ballad until the jaunty chorus kicks in. It just doesn't fit the rest of the song for me.
Would probably be a bit dull with a simple chorus too though so I fully reserve the right to remain unsatisfied! Last edited by Glyn; 27-04-2018 at 09:47. |

Must admit I can't stand the song generally.

That's my issue with it too. I can't take it seriously with that guitar riff being exactly the same as that song.

They reference and quote music and lyrics all the time. Refreshing my memory of the song Turning Japanese, I think it kind of works on numerous on multiple levels if it’s an intentional nod, pictures, photographs, the connection to the album cover... not just the riff (rif). If it’s not intentional it’s pretty serendipitous.
