You wouldn't find Hitler listening to Autumnsong at 3 in the morning.

Thank goodness. Wouldn't want such a great song wasted on an evil man!

i am sure there are many who can give an answer to this. mine would be :

Now baby, what've you done to your hair?
Is it just the same time of year
When you think that you don't really care?
Now baby, what have you done?
Done to your hair, done to your hair, done to your hair, done to your hair, hair!

we've gone from the lyrics of Faster, Tolerate, etc, etc to this, have we?

unless "baby" is some particular groupie and the question about what they've done to their hair relates to some bizarre dying or inspired pattern shaving of his or her pubic hair and it's one massive injoke, i really don't give a fuck who has done what to their hair, let alone hearing it being asked by one of the, if not the, finest bands of their generation.

they can do pop as in be popular and be themselves quite easily - done it often enough. there was no need, unless it is all some sort of private in-joke, to resort to this jukebox bubblegum nonsense. on the record it doesn't even sound like they are enjoying it, i have not plucked up the courage to play a bootleg of it live.

The lyrics are about youth and youthfulness I feel (see the much maligned video!). Y'know, young girls messing with their hair, young lads bashing about in a garage to try and form a band etc. I think some people seem to miss the point of Autumnsong a wee bit!

Yeah, I get that, but it's still bad. Doesn't change anything

For the record, an Autumnsong Appreciation Society achieving world domination? The very thought gives me horrible nightmares.

I agree with this explanation, but partially.
Plus, I wouldn't focus only on youth. To me, the song is about being conscious that every moment is the right moment to change your life, to free yourself from what you're supposed to be, to do anything you feel you should be doing instead of what you're supposed to be doing, to understand that you have the right and the power and the ability to do whatever you like and to be whatever you want to be.
All these things have no age, they can happen to anyone at anytime, that's why I said that, to me, it's not just about being young and such things.

If you've ever been through one or more of these feelings, then you'll be able to understand what the song and its feeling are about, otherwise you'll just find it dull.

I love the repetition, like 'done to your hair, done to your hair, ...' because I find it powerful and full of strenght. It's not just about someone who has cut their hair, it's about change, it's about taking back your life.

For the record, changing the hairstyle is, for women, an important moment. It means that they're going through a phase, that they're ready to change, that something or someone has destroy their inside and that they're ready to rebuild it. (Note: let's not forget that Nicky wrote this song, and it is not a mistery his ability to switch to women's point of views)

And honestly, if every song of Manic Street Preachers was about the Spanish civil war, I probably wouldn't be here. What a boring band they would be

Come on! One song! One!

By the way I reckon your above explanation can be the manifesto for this society. Forward it to Gutless for her consideration, not that I like to have any part in the actions of the group

so what you are saying, then, is that Autumnsong by the Manics is a vague attempt to do in 3 minutes what The Who did in a double album with Quadrophenia? well done on making the song seem even worse to me now

question - if the song is about youth and youthfulness, why call it Autumn?

Its more about the twilight of youth, that when you grow up you'll never experience those long summer times again.

OMG DEEPEST SONG IN THE HISTORY OF SONGS!!! SOOOO DEEEP!!!
