Welcome to the Deadzone and Prologue are the only ones I genuinely like as much as my favourite singles and album tracks. On the whole I can take or leave about 90% of their b-sides.

Sepia (just perfect melancholia)
First Republic (love the repetitive keyboard riff in the middle)
Morning Comrades (JDB's best acoustic)
Black Garden (Weird but cool as fuck intro)
Starlover (Top riff and saw it played at Heavenly Festival thingy)
Too Cold Here (JDB's best acoustic Mk II)
It's All Gone (Odd but great)
Welcome To The Deadzone (brilliant vocals and just great song)

Are Mothers Saints?

I was going to list and almost put Too Cold Here for sentimental reasons and make a list of favourite b-sides. But I was asked for one.
So there it is

Are Mothers Saints? (Even though Sculpture Of Man was the one that first sucked me in)

The KYE era is the only time i have tolerated Nicky's voice. Watsville Blues, Ballad of the Bankok Novotel and Goundhog Days are all excellent songs. Wonder why that is?

Back to other great b-sides though...

Horses Under Starlight
Montana/Autumn 78 (what the majority of GATS should've sounded like)
Hanging On
No One Knows What It's Like to Me (very Holy-Bibley)
Valley Boy
Close My Eyes
It's All Gone
Boxes & Lists
Anorexic Roedin (Iron Maiden tribute, but great still)

and many, many others. Too many in fact, it's a shame they never play them live!

Shite?

Never Want Again
Ain't Goin Down
Hibernation
First Republic
Socialist Serenade

Sepia & Prologue to history. The first is just beautiful and the second, I love jdb's voice and I love the lyrics. Love the bit how James sings Sean William Ryder.

If I had to choose one single best b-side, I'd have to go with 'Sepia' - lovely lyric, great pacing, and a fantastic solo. Was almost certainly recorded after 'EMG' was released but would have been one of its best tracks if included. Wouldn't have fitted on 'Truth' though so maybe it should have been a one-off single or something.

However, following the example of others;

2) 'Too Cold Here' - absolutely beautiful. Can't believe the band hate it...oh, actually, I can.

After that it becomes hard to order them, so the other best tracks;

'Welcome To The Dead Zone' - *had* to be on 'Tigers', and would have been a better single than 'Autumnsong' for me. Mind you, three and a half minutes of silence would have given 'Autumnsong' a run for its money.

'Morning Comrades' - gorgeous acoustic lament.

'Litany' - ok, needs a second verse, but the one verse it has is so perfect it just about gets away with the repetition. Again, had to make it onto 'Lifeblood'.

'Everyone Knows / Nobody Cares' - the kind of electro-disco-pop that 'Lifeblood' could have done with more of. Maybe the 'open goal' title put them off?

'Everything Will Be' - again, the heavier electro edge would have helped give 'Lifeblood' more of an identity. Of course, would have been even better with the trombone part and guitar solo from the 2003 live version.

'Unstoppable Salvation' - understated little gem.

'Ballad of the Bangkok Novotel' - the closest the Manics have come to writing a proper punk track. I like 'Wattsville' but 'Novotel' should have made the album instead.

'Buildings For Dead People' - hated it when I first heard it, but the riffage won me over eventually. Again, probably recorded after the album was released but would have helped the second half of the album.

'Black Garden' - the kind of weird track the slightly too 'straight-ahead' 'EMG' needed to keep it interesting.

'Dead Trees and Traffic Islands' - a folk track with a northern soul beat, one of the least likely musical shapes the Manics have assumed but really beautiful, especially the 'la's at the end.

'We Her Majesty's Prisoners' - fantastic rock out.

Ok, that's a top 13 not a top 10, but I've still missed loads out.

I think the manics made the best b-sides around the time EMG was released, personal faves are.....

dead passive
sepia
first republic
no one knows what its like to be me
donkeys
sorrow 16
prologue to history (should of been on the album)
bored out of my mind
everyone knows/nobody cares (again, should have been on the album)

there's probably a lot I haven't heard or forgotten about...its a shame bands aren't or can't really release b-sides now because of singles not being released

Listening to Prologue right now. I don't think I'd have wanted it on the album to be honest. For me it works better as a b-side. Great song of course!
