Leviathan
I know these "praise this song I like too" threads are a bit kitsch but I couldn't help it... sorry....
Leviathan is a pretty exciting song I think. They seemed to treat it just as a throw-away but it's got some interesting words to say the least and some loud guitars with James just about to break out into screaming mode. Lovely little guitar solo.... When speaking of Richey's word Nicky said he's tried to do that (whatever "that" is") and that he can't. There's loads of references - Hobbes, MPLA baader-meinhof and medusa touch. What's the problem? Why not do more songs kinda like this rather the rather uninspiring crap like "Oh we have to save the banks cause they mean so much to our lives". I get the impression that they shouldn't have bothered saying they were taking a break for two years and just carry on making some angry rock and roll. A Secret Society and Leviathan I think stand in stark contrast to their most recent output to come from Wire's words. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEN7NUJbT9E http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NN6wfkTqR4 |

I got slated by NME for saying I love Leviathan but do I care? Do I heck!

I love Leviathan but I think that's bollocks.

I used to think the lyrics were Manics-by-numbers, and therefore hate it, but the song grew on me and it's one of my favourites now.

and they paid attention to Pigeon Detectives, which should be a crime.
But yes, I agree wholeheartedly on Leviathan. Cracking little tune and brilliant lyrics. It should have been on SATT. That, along with Morning Comrade would have improved the album hugely. In terms of Secret Society, I loved it at the time, but it doesn't stand the test of time well. The lyrics are quite contrived and the music is weak. It does make for an interesting B-side, but little more than that.

Leviathan is probably in my top 5 favourite Manics songs. I love everything about it, James' voice is amazing.

I wish they'd come up with an ending for Leviathan, that's the only thing that bothers me about it.

isn't it pre-SATT?

I think I'm grateful for the fade-out. It at least gives the illusion that there is a decent ending hidden away somewhere - unlike every other piss-poor full stop they've given to their songs over the past four years. Was Leviathan their last fade-out?

It's long enough, in my opinion. It's got three verses, a decent chorus, a solo, and the sample at the start.

I always wondered what happened to the spoken intro that was on the download but not on the CD. Copyright I presume ?

I agree with you on Secret Society, but I just thought Leviathan was a bit throw away and cliche.
