Bit of fun! However I can't believe that Working Class Hero is worse that Repeat (Stars and Stripes). I admit that WCH is hardly the greatest cover ever but Repeat (Stars and Stripes) is a self indulgent piece of complete nonsense that backfired terribly and left a smouldering crater in the middle of an album that took three songs to pull back.

Not just the worst thing MSP did, but the worst thing Public Enemy were ever linked to as well, and that includes the lyrics and delivery to Cold Lampin' with Flavour

I'm surprised this has gone by without comment. Did this really happen? Did the database contain personal info like email addresses and passwords.

Yep. The mods were doing some work on rejigging the website or changing providers or something, and for a few days, the homepage of foreverdelayed.org.uk was just an apache file listing containing nothing but the database dump. Perhaps they thought that uploading the dump was all they needed to do to make the forum work again, and didn't realize that they had to install the vBulletin software and use phpmyadmin to convert the database dump into a functioning sql database.

Regarding the data, there wasn't much personal info to be had (vBulletin, thankfully, doesn't ask for much more than it displays), but emails addresses and passwords were included, emails in plaintext and passwords as salted MD5 hashes.

Hmm well that’s a bit of a fuck up, isn’t it? It’s my limited understanding that md5 hashed passwords with a salt cannot hold up to even a modest brute force attack so I hope whatever password people are using here they’re not using elsewhere for anything sensitive. When was this anyway? I don’t recall the mods ever mentioning it and they absolutely should have.

That's bad. Should have disclosed to all users. Rude not to.

We lost the Manics Musicians thread/section a while back for goodness sake and yet we have threads and threads on polls and polls filling up the forum.

Glad to see the forum's perked up since the survivor threads have finished.... It's not as if someone is just merely making this post so that the forum doesn't go a full 24 hours without a post.

It's the way of the internet though? How many websites from 15 years ago are actually still around. Of the forums I visited only two (including this one) still exist, only through the charity of those who pay the server costs.

Those that Manics guitar site still exist? I remember that being quite good up to journals at least.

Jamie’s site is still knocking about but only goes up to Lifeblood, sadly. http://www.manicsguitar.20m.com/albums.html

Madbob (?) was another one with a decent selection of tabs.

Absolute shambles how much we’ve lost with the pruning of the musicians’ forum.

He has a point though, and I would rather see quality over quantity.

We’ve lost some really valuable posts which have had years of hard work put into them, but over the last few months when you log in to this forum it’s been poll after poll after poll, I guess people find them rather tedious after a while.

Obviously the fact that the album has been out a fair while now and the promo work and tours are over, it’s going to quieten down.

I would imagine people see the polls, see old music threads deleted and then decide that they can’t be arsed to post.

Probably comes across harsher than it sounds, but I’m sure you get the point.

So pleased to know this still exists! I did all the tabs for the early demos on there, many many moons ago

You can't have quality without any quantity though. The threat is the that the powers that be see bugger all traffic on the site and scrap the forum altogether. Polls are separate to the tabs though and I don't see the connection.

The entire forum was gutted not just manic musicians. From what what I understand it was a decision between scrapping the majority of the posts from the heyday or losing the entire forum altogether. Perhaps the mods should have given people more notice to archive everything, perhaps they did. It might worth petitioning that MSPedia gets updated with tabs and offering to help out with the leg work?

I remember once suggesting that FD should set up a photo archive ala StayBeautiful's and got savaged for even suggesting it. Considering the amount of resources FD had via its membership, it's quite sad how little of it was mobilised to create something to stand the test of time. A lot of MSPedia is quite good and I applaud the hard work of the too few people who contributed to it but I find it a bit sad there's not more.
