What an album. I finally had an evening to myself on Friday, so was able to play it on my decent speakers with no distractions after having it on headphones and in the car constantly for the past few weeks. There really is no filler and every song seems to offer something fresh on subsequent listens. When JDB released his first album, part of me didn't warm to it because it wasn't a Manics album and sounded nothing like Lifeblood (I really liked Lifeblood). Now I'm over the fact they are not imminently splitting up, and I'm a bit older and wiser, I've been able to put all of that aside and listen to EIE on its own merits.

There is a part of me that thinks that ever since SATT, many of their albums have been overly self-conscious about trying to be a 'manics album', which perhaps holds them back in some ways. The better albums have been when they forget about that for a while (Futurology, RWTF). This being a solo project has allowed James to let his imagination and influences run wild, and it's bloody amazing. Also giving TGW some more time too.

I think this is the only ‘MSP’ album (allow it) where I like the instrumentals

Finally checking in here with some thoughts. I'd say that this album is on a par with RIF. In the same vein as the TIMT tour, it's nice to hear James let his hair down and make something he wants to make. That might lead to things being slightly disjointed at times (I find the instrumentals stall the flow of the album a bit myself) but that doesn't detract from the overall feeling it creates.

It's already been said, but Recuerda is an instaclassic up there with the very best. I like how other songs venture into new territory, or just back into places we haven't heard for a while. Without Knowing the End reminds me of a song like VSEC. Violetta reminds me of those slightly quirky off kilter moments from EMG and TIMT a bit. And the last 2 songs are different to almost everything he's ever done, but are just really great.

Either way, it's great to hear James stretch himself and even nicer to hear him so clearly having fun. Great stuff.

my discovery over the weekend; the Plantation demo works great as a final, concluding track to the album, like a mournful reprise of the central theme.

The music on this album, IMO, sounds like a mix of Simple Minds and Rush, in a good way!

Why does this shit always happen with MSP merch?
I am having some shit ass luck with this record!

The blue variant I ordered from Rough Trade showed up with a second label affixed to the B-side, but just askew enough to be glued on top of the grooves of the last song, basically ruining the record...

And the "signed" one that wasn't atually signed was warped. So now I have two useless records.

Was there a difference in price between signed and unsigned? I also ordered both signed vinyl and cd and just received an unsigned vinyl in the post.

Does anyone know where to listen to the demos without having to buy direct from the official store? I would love some popcorn kernels....

Really love this album. After The Great Western I wasn't sure how much I wanted another JDB album and thought I might end up seeing it as a time-filler before the next Manics record but I was totally wrong. Even In Exile is a massive step-up after RIF and I love the mix of more low-key tracks and songs on which James lets his guitar playing totally fly.

Now, I await news of Nick's solo album eagerly as I really liked IKTZ.

Finally got my signed CD as well.
I didn’t know that the signed bit wasn’t the booklet, but rather an additional 12” sheet.

Great record, but I just put on Resistance is Futie -- and man, somehow they're still so much bigger when they're together. Even if it's not their best album, just a fairly enjoyable one...
