i think the deal was that they would pay sony the rights to the music from the profits from the film but they changed their mind and wanted it upfront. Something like that

Yes, the deal changed from paying them out of the sales to paying them upfront. I don't want to go into the details because I can't remember them exactly, and I don't know how much they said on here, but it's all in this thread.

Well that wasn't very nice of Sony...
Hopefully they'll get things straightened out, we're all gagging to see it.

Can't really see the harm in trying, it doesn't seem like there's been much progress from any other route...

Or call their bluff - put it out with soundalike covers of the songs. We could do them ourselves and I believe it would get around the rights issue (meaning you only have to pay royalties and not ask permission) but I may be wrong.

I dunno, it's up to them though. For a kickstarter you need to offer something and it seemed like they were concerned they couldn't guarantee anything with the amount needed. My guess is they know a lot more about what might be effective than we can speculate. As far as I know they are still trying, so there probably has been progress.

Doesn't really add up. The documentary is essentially a promotional tool for their band, something they would ordinarily spend a decent amount of money on themselves.

I'm not suggesting the label is correct, just that their market nous is likely to be considerably more realistic than that of a small independent film outfit, or that of fans who've seen a preview screening of a film about "their band" come to that.

Yep, not nice of Sony. What are the contracts for if they can be changed as someone pleases?

I don't even know if the label has seen the film, or whether they just have no interest in it at all. Given how lousy the Manics PR has been at a number of times, I'm not sure I believe they are more qualified to assess the market of this than the people who made it, who have plenty of experience.

The clock is ticking and the more time it ticks the less likely it is to this film to be made public.

When the inevitable 10th anniversary rerelease of SATT comes out, just put No Manifesto as a bonus DVD. Then all the fans who hate the album will still buy it as it contains No Manifesto, therefore guaranteeing sales.
