Just thought I'd give a quick bit on the gig (don't think there's anyone else from the forum that was there!)

First half was amazing. EMG as an album just sounds phenomenal live. Even the songs I always felt were weaker - The Girl Who Wanted to be God, for example - sounded superb.

Interiors and Removables rocked, and No Surface All Feeling gave me tears in my eyes.
The crowd loved it, and hearing Elvis Impersonator, Everything Must Go and A Design For Life belted out by all and sundry was beautiful.

Japan got a couple of mentions, getting cheers from the crowd. Wire: "Little known Manics fact, the next song was released as a single only in Japan... with a green cover" (Further Away).

Onto part two - no interval, but an acoustic break instead, with James introducing a song that he forgets some of the words to. "I can remember the verse... the chorus... the bridge... the second verse... but never the third." A call from yours truly to make up the words was met with a little scatting from JDB, before he launched into Stay Beautiful. Which sounded really good acoustic. Big "fuck off"s from the crowd.

In the acoustic section, we're treated to James chatting rugby. "So, rugby world cup coming to Japan..." He tells us how he was the only person cheering for Japan in the pub when they played South Africa recently.

Acoustic Ocean Spray next, just guitar and trumpet. Then we blast into You Love Us, with loads of crowd surging and jumping, but this is Japan - so it's all good natured and in good fun - before You Stole The Sun, Walk Me To The Bridge and Your Love Alone.

Then Wire steps up to the mic. "This next song, we haven't played in ages. We're only playing it because we want to piss off people in the UK who keep wanting to hear something from Lifeblood." He introduces A Song For Departure. The crowd loves it. The guitar solo sounds other-worldly. A great choice.

If You Tolerate This is up next, before another surprise track is announced. "We always loved playing this one in Japan." It's Born to End. A full venue screaming "Nagasaki dolls are burning!!!" livens it up no end.

The trumpet is back for Show Me The Wonder, before the last track is announced - of course, it's the third-choice closer (Tolerate and Design having gone already), Motorcycle Emptiness. More tears in my eyes for that one.

And then it's all over. A quick thanks, and they're off. We're shooed out of the venue. Head around the back to try get an autograph, but there's no-one else there, and the venue tells us to do one, despite the vans clearly waiting for the band at the back door. Even our media press passes didn't cut it.

After 12 Manics gigs since 2001, I reckon this one was easily in the top 3 I've been to. A band that was on form, enjoying it, relaxed but giving it their all. Just a shame Wire has toned it down in recent years, banter-wise.

Also - instrument geek notes - Wire never changed bass, and stuck with his red Fender Japan Aerodyne P-bass throughout (the one with the Sex Pistols sticker). JDB was with his trusty Les Paul for almost the entire gig, apart from the Thinline Tele for Kevin Carter, and his acoustic for Small Black Flowers, Stay Beautiful and Ocean Spray. Wayne was on his tele for much of the set, but pulled out some awful orange/red thing for a few tracks, and played acoustic on a few also.

A tweet from Sean before the gig showed the dressing room with a Fender Japan Aerodyne Jazz bass in what I think it Aztec Gold or Shoreline Gold. Tweeted him back and asked, and he confirmed what it was, then said he'd actually bought it, imported from Hiroshima.

So there you go.

8,000 yen well spent (about £60 in today's money - most expensive Manics gig I've attended!)

JDB: "bla bla speed, power, intelligence... and fucking Twitter. can you believe we're from the same gene pool? relatives? I'm a fucking luddite..."

Fantastic!
And glad you've managed to see them live recently.
I think we could see a return to UK stadiums when they next tour, their musicianship alone is big enough for them.
Did you manage to get the second night or could only do one date?

Nah, couldn't get down to Osaka and back again for work the next morning, sadly. Seems all I missed songwise though was Little Baby Nothing in place of Stay Beautiful.

Motorcycle Emptiness as the set closer, have they done that before? Hope they do that again in future.

I dunno you know. It made a nice change from Design or Tolerate, and really worked well as a closer.

I really dislike hearing Motorcycle Emptiness early in the set (especially when it opens) - i feels like it needs to build up towards it, so having it last would be amazing

You'd think so, but it seemed to work well. Perhaps Rewind the Film did really well in Japan, I dunno. The crowd went for it though.
