Merchandise and making money.....(unofficial stuff)

Was reading about bands making their money through touring & merchandise and obviously not cd sales now. It got me thinking; do you think the Manics get pissed off with dodgy merchandise and un-official stuff being sold on ebay, outside gigs etc? There are some cheap & nasty things on there and obviously making money on the back of the band; & particularly Richey's image.

What do you think?

The price of the 'official' stuff is bad though, if it matched the prices of the 'dodgy' stuff they would get more sales.

Probably, but it's a fact of life for all bands, really.

Doubt it, the opportunity cost of a few bits of cheap tat wouldn't buy a shoebox

I've heard a fair few stories of the band really liking unofficial merch that's been presented to them for signing and such. I guess it's down to how it's done. There are some awfully cheap and tasteless cash-ins about, but there are some nice and well-made things too.

I imagine they're flattered the official merchandise isn't "enough". It feeds into that whole secret history thing they've always been so keen on.

As for cheap tat, almost every "outside venue" shirt and hoody I've ever bough has outlasted an official equivalent. I still have a bootleg Bluetones long-sleeve from my first ever gig, £5 well spent.

Because for some reason people queue up to buy badges, mugs, itchy hoodies and other tat in their droves.

I can usually find a much nicer t-shirt for $35 (or two at the Gap) at a different store.

I have to buy stuff from eBay because:

1. I'm in North America and have never been to a gig
2. I have never seen merch for sale anywhere here
3. They need to do an overhaul on their online store because I would buy from there. At least have tour merch for sale online.
