Richey - The Wrong Beginning

I don't know if this has been pointed out before but, last night, I was reading Simon Price's book on the band, and in an interview, Richey says:
"I honestly believe things would have been different if I'd have had blue eyes."
And this lyric to James' Wrong Beginning just came to mind:
"Please don't ever tell me, how it could have been different if you would have had blue eyes."

Just a thought.

i think its been mentioned before. in addition, youve got all the richey saying about perfect circles...which is also referenced in the song. sadly that awful gospel chorus prevents me from listening to it!

James was talking about the song and Richey in an interview on his website or MySpace, can't remember exactly which site it was.

James did actually say at either the London or Oxford gig (I forget which) that it was about Richey.

It's my favourite song on the album. Live, it is amazing.

At Newbridge he said it was about "a very personal friend of mine, Nick and Sean's," which I took to mean Richey.

At least I *think* it was at Newbridge, I've lost track having listened to so many bootlegs!

Reading the lyrics it does sound like it's about how Richey should have left the band in 94, or never built up the whole "Richey image" in the first place. The line "And now the only payback is that everybody wants to know" is presumably about him being a the "Missing rock legend." (Copyright the tabloids, 1995-2006).

That fits in with one of the 'These things I know' Grauniad article.

I can't help but feel that, after 12 years, all these richey references are being inserted into songs because they're expected.

I doubt that to be honest, i still make references to the freinds and the girlfreind who have passed on.

You almost make a concisous decision sometimes not to make something about it, but in the end you do.

Plus its James first written material much like "English Gentlemen" its the first time he has had the chance to put demons to rest.
