Tokyo Skyline - potential template for Futurology sound?

So we've repeatedly been told that the Manics' 2014 album (whatever it eventually gets called) is heavily influenced by Krautrock, and there's a definite Can vibe to Tokyo Skyline. Could that set the tone for what's to come next?

Have the band given any other hints towards the direction the sound will take? I remember Nicky claiming it to be the spiritual successor to THB and JFPL, neither of which have a particularly krautrock sound to them. But no doubt we all remember Lifeblood being described as "THB for 30-somethings" and should take these descriptions with a similar sack of salt...

I was going to say the thing about 30YW being the bridge but someone's beaten me to it

Well, good stuff and that makes sense. But the question remains - do you see them doing more in the style of Tokyo Skyline? It's obviously an old song so the unusual style seems a little surprising, unless they totally reinterpreted it for the album... and even then, it's the only track of this style on the record.

I think not… I think 30YW is going to be the nearest-sounding thing to the next album.

I don't hear "spiky" describing (IMT)Tokyo Skyline at all. I mean it sounds Japanese / Asian, which makes sense for obvious reasons, but would somewhat undermine the description of 'European'.

Having said that, I would love an album that all sounded like (IMT)TS.

There is probably a link between Lifeblood and this track, as it was probably written around that time (that cities album).

I don't really know what krautrock sounds like, and things always sound different from what they usually say. I wouldn't really read anything into this. It would have been on the 2nd album if there was any sort of link. It's the 2nd or 3rd weakest song on the album for me so I hope it isn't a sign of things to come.

What makes you say it's an old song?

Wasn't it written as part of the Cities album project that was planned before Lifeblood? The only song that survived from that (up until now) was Cardiff Afterlife.

Nicky has said that "the next album in particular is filled with travel and motion and other places, because you just get tired with your own environment."

I don't see it. Lovely instrumentation but it generally feels like it could have been on Lifeblood at some point. The end of 30 year war sounds like a good bridge into the next album.

Maybe the next album will feature a bunch of left-overs from that "city album" then?
"The Dublin Lag", "Stockholm Alone" and "Copenhagen ??? something", I remember being mentioned.

Ah, shame that the best song on the album is about ten years old. I knew nothing of that project!
