Also, this is their last album for Sony. That’s how passionate everyone involved is about working together.

Excellent interview. Though i hope now we can put to rest whether nicky voted remain or not, i've seen speculation on here that he probably voted leave. Naming no names of course... coughUEFcough.

That's brilliant! Thank you so much for posting.

Pretty much as I expected, and everything after 10 is sobering.

I think TIMTTMY outsold EMG internationally though.

No wonder the band holds PFAYM in such high regards. It's bloody awful and it sold 100K+ in 2010! That is a crazy amount. 122K for NT is pretty decent too.

I've never understood why JFPL sold so few - it was their worst-selling original album until RTF and F, and the latter two's sales are really just symptomatic of changing consumption habits.

To be fair they were clearly very nervous of the accusation of 'cashing in on Richey' so the no singles approach (limited airplay of JCEQT aside) was always likely to limit sales. Its lack of concession to mass market appeal is one of the joys of Journal so I'm glad there was no commercial side to that album.

Just to go back to the Drowned in Sound interview , something that has slowly hit home for me is Nicky making a small aside about just how good La Tristessa is as a song. Its always been my favourite on the album but thinking it over there is a fair point that at that time it was the best thing they had ever done but they had no platform to make it the giant hit it should have been. ME is clearly fantastic but there is something so much more musically mature about La Tristessa. I saw someone once say it was 'perfectly weighted' and I struggle to think of a better example of theres of a song that starts so simply but builds so magnificently.

It's interesting too that sales of TIMTTMY in Britain were only 2.9 per cent below those of EMG - essentially the same. Then comes KYE and sales fall off a cliff: down -79.1 per cent on TIMTTMY after two million-sellers.

We all love KYE and it's a masterpiece etc etc but imagine how that meeting of the record company went: 'Hang on - this is wasn't what we agreed...'

Brilliant. Reminds me of Mr. Tourette from Modern Toss.

Exactly. They publicly rebelled against mass communication and spent most of the next albums trying to come back for another bite

Yep. Even the artwork for KYE and the first two singles made it difficult to read the name of the band (!)

I was astonished when FTS and SWSS charted as high as they did - I've remarked before on here how long it took me (a dedicated fan) to locate them in the singles rack, due to the generally muted design.

Adore that era's design and artwork though (as also remarked upon before).

They’ve just signed a new record deal and bought a new studio, but this could be final.

So THIS is why each Manics' album is so good and done with full dedication!

You know what they say, "live every day as if it were your last".
So
"Make your every album as if it were your last".

Bad joke, I know
Okay, I'm done.

...another one of those times I wish this forum had ‘like’ buttons of some kind...

Yeaahhh. I mean it could be final. That is technically true... but I would guess it won’t be, as you astutely and eloquently argue.

It is a cool Q cover. The Mojo illustration is still the winner for this campaign so far though, I think.
