As soon as I heard of this I was thinking how conspiracy theorists will be having a field day...
It's unlikely that he was killed by MI5, MI6 or anyone else, simply because the security service often actively dislike the current ruling party, and certainly wouldn't assassinate someone to protect them from a political scandal...

Maybe the stress was too much and he had a heart attack in the field..........or thats what they'll say ;)

Its a really horrible thing to have happened, it makes me despise the media even more. Apparently he was being compared to Harold Shipman in some papers!

There will be many people using this to attack the government, and some are doing this by way of insinuating that Blair had him killed. I don't believe this, I believe he committed suicide and this will reflect on the Government just as badly, but it's important to remember that the bottom line is that it appears he has committed suicide and therefore this is a personal tragedy for his family.

As far as I can tell, he did nothing wrong and was an honourable man. That's what the papers are saying today, but not yesterday... or at any stage last week. Before yesterday, people either gave him grief (from what has happened, that can't be denied) or hadn't a clue who he was, and I was in the latter category.

the government or MI5/6 would have had nothing to gain from him being killed now as he had already appeared before the select committee and his comments had appeared in the press etc. And if they had wanted him to disappear they would be much more successful by discrediting the person rather than having them killed (like what happened to Arthur Scargill and many others). Actually if anything he was discrediting the bbc and Andrew Gilligan (who incidentally is ex- Daily Mail and Daily Torygraph so whats his agenda?) more than the government..

the medias hands are dirty in pushing the man to suicide, if thats what has happened. Another example of their massive power without any responsibility whatsoever.

He seemed like a decent guy, and one of the main experts in his field so will be a big loss in more ways than one :(

It smells very fishy, but i think thats the first thought everyone has. I know i did. But when you think about, it's probably unlikely.

According to his family, he's been going through hell, so i'm not surprised it's come to him commiting sucide. It should really be a personal tragedy not an excuse to attack the government.

So saying, i expect that if M15/M16 wanted him dead, then they could do it. I don't really think they did though.

I agree and i'm not sure which paper said that he looked like dr harold shipman( I think it was the Evening Standard) but that must have scared the poor man so much. I think its immensely hypocritical when I saw the papers on Saturday and Sunday saying that Downing Streets hands are dirty, when if they hadn't have spoken to Kelly he may have not died. However, Kelly must have known the dangers about talking to the press. Which I think raises another question: should people be bound by such things as the official secrets act if they act on their conscience?

I think the first person to resign because of all this - before any govenment minister - should be Andrew Gilligan. Obviously we don't know the facts, but it was quite clear just from the committee interview that Kelly was "the source" but hadn't said exactly what Gilligan reported. The fact he didn't recognise himself as the source, yet met Gilligan at that hotel on the specific day, suggests it wasn't reported quite truthfully. (Of course, Kelly could have been lying - now we'll never know, other than Gilligan's word).

As much as I dislike this government, I agree with maradona in that the media seem to think they can print whatever they like, regardless of the consequences.

When I first heard the news, my instant reaction was "Alistair Campbell did it" too. :D Kind of given up on that theory now though...

Whether it was a conspiracy or not, Blair is fucked. History is going to remember him for this.

Which is what he wants! ie the 'history will forgive speech' to congress. He probably wants to be remembered in a slightly more positive light though.
