What do people think about this...the guy got an organ donor...he was fine for years..and now he's gone on an alcoholic binge..
I really sympthise with the donors family..
This is selfish

I have no sympathy for him at all. What a stupid twat. My best friend has a liver disease that means she probably won't live to see 30 (she's twenty now), and for her a liver transplant isn't even a very viable option... George Best was lucky enough to be suitable for a liver transplant AND end up with a good quality of life and he fucks it up monumentally. So fucking selfish. Sorry, but i'm really fucked off at it. </rant>
He is a lovely fellow though I have meet him a few times (he drinks at my local) when he is staying at the health farm down the road, and they wont sell him chips!
he drinks at my local
Yes it is. Although i suppose if he is an alcoholic, it must be a very difficult thing to give up drinking, and also pretty hard to keep it going. I don't know anything about the situation, and i'm not trying to make any excuses, but i think it's a fair point.
I just hope somebody manages to make him see sense.

it is extremely selfish of him....
there are many people who are genuinely ill through no fault of their own who are waiting for new livers...his is self inflicted.
however, i do know how difficult it is with alcohol addiction - not me personally but family member...and yes it is selfish but also upsetting to watch someone self-destruct.
why is he even in pubs if he is an alcoholic?!?!?!? we are very careful not to take my family member to pubs/bars etc... and how awful is it that the pub was actually serving him?!?!?!?!?!? doesn't help matters - it's ridiculous!!!!!!! the owner must have realised who he was and should have refused him alcohol...so george best is not solely to blame.
i think they should threaten to take his liver away - scare him because he has been given an oppotunity - he should be thankful, lots of people weren't as lucky as him.

It is very ignorant of him to start drinking again, and after such a long time away from alcohol as well. Makes me think he's probably been drinking secretly for several months now.
But what for his friends who sit with him in the pub, watching him destroy himself... do they really want to see that?
So-called friends - what a bunch of idiots.

but surely he is... he's an adult and he's entirely responsable for his own actions. I'm not saying the pub owner SHOULD have sold him alcohol, but it's not his fault that George Best is an idiot.

yeh i guess so....
but an addict is an addict - the pub owner reserves the right to refuse a customer alcohol....don't they???
If george did come into your pub and asked seriously for a drink, you wouldn't have the cheek to refuse though would you? In your mind you'd think "oh he's clear now" or "oh he can drink in moderation then".. so no not an irresponsible act by the publican/barman.
I was thinking about this earlier. What would I do if I worked in a bar and George Best wanted a drink? Should I serve him? Although I think what he's doing is very irresponsible and stupid, it wouldn't really be any of my business to refuse to serve him. I'd feel like a bit of a moralising prick. After all the only reason we know of his problem is because he's famous, there's probably loads of people who do the same but get away with it because they aren't in the public eye.

Addictions tend to takeover the mind, body and soul. I know this doesnt justify his actions..but an alcoholic has the similar thought processes as a drug addict, a manic depressive or a self harmer..i dont mean to offend anybody and I'm by no means justifying his actions..I think the human mind is a complex thing to sort out and deal with. He is selfish for what he's doing to his family and wouldnt blame anybody for saying he should be left to die. His actions have no justification.
And if you were in the position of having to serve the guy in the pub..I think I would get the Landlord involved or maybe one of the local mental health authorities or possibly the police if he got violent
I think contacting a mental health agency would be inappopriate.
They interviewed the landlord and he said something like he thought it was ok for him in moderation.l
They also said that drinking alcohol would make him very sick because he had anti-alcohol pills sewn into his stomach (or something), so you wouldn't enjoy a drink, you would be doing it out of necessity.

I dont mean to sound..like I'm questioning what you're saying or anything :o
But alcoholism and any other addiction stems from some experience in life..well I think :o

Maybe it's true that some unhappiness may set them on the path to addiction, but I think some people are just more prone to addiction than others, perhaps because of some physical/genetic reason. Addictions aren't just things like drugs/alcohol/cigarettes after all, they come in all shapes and sizes.

Quite likely, but i don't think it's a mental health issue. At least thats my opinion, i have no idea whether it's correct or not. ;)

Perhaps it was fame and fortune that did it  That is something that you cant prepare yourself for...no matter what..
Just got back from work, and guess who was in having a drink.
It was actualy quite funny to watch my boss / landlord monitor him, and checking the car park for the press at the same time. He didn't drink much and left by 9, whilst my boss gave a big sigh of relief.
Apperantly he is staying in the local health farm.
I we were warned to not to talk to the press, not that there were any aroud.
wow - I agree, if I was the family of the organ donor I'd be very brassed off
