View Full Version : Overused words
Some words in the english language are really overused. Its one of those little things that bugs me.
Right, I'll start the list with "Exclusive"
I really hate that word. Whether it be on Manics.co.uk or in a tabloid.
my pet hate: 'deliver'.
Once upon a time, deliver meant something Royal Mail did. Now, it can mean whatever Tony Blair wants it to.
and, in advertising and magazines: 'essential' and 'must-have,' which usually refers to some kind of tanning system or new breed of flip-flops or makeup or something, like I'll die if I don't buy it. twats.
oh... that feels good. :D

'Free' - it's very rare that things are free! They just charge through the roof for something so they can include a 'free gift' that's another thing how can you have a free gift?! It's a complete contradiction! It's either free or a gift but you can't have both because gifts are always free! lol! That really annoys me!

Words I don't like are; (I know they aren't used that often but hey they are still words I hate!) Refridgerator (would help if I could spell!) Mucus, Perrisshed and Parched. They are just horrible words
oh, I think perished always sounds quite romantic, even if you're only talking about rubber.

like, and y'know
;)
The word 'capers' always scares me a bit. It's a really... hectic word, for a type of food. I just don't like it.
'At the end of the day' , 'like' , 'sort of', all annoying Essex-isms which I hate but am equally guilty of using :(

It is a bit worrying. For some reason I imagine them capering in around in the cupboard, stinking the place out, because they really arent nice are they? Then when they finally get too old, they burst out of the jar and attack you, when you're looking for soup or something.
Also if you say the word Coleslaw lots of times, it does sound utterly ridiculous.
Solutions.... it's used for everything nowadays, as if everything is a problem.... pisses me off.
In Tesco there is a sign where they keep the ready meals that says "meal solutions"... I mean for god's sake who actually thinks "god it's so problematic having to make myself some food".....grrrr
Solutions is indeed an overused word. I seem to be guilty of using it all the time though. I tend to pop it into coursework. Like "Sustainable housing solutions"
Solutions! *lol at Tracey's post* That's another horrible marketing word. It's good for selling things to people, cos if you haven't got the solution, you've obviously got a *problem*.

... I hadn't actually thought about it that hard :P , but there's just something fairytale nasty about the word. 'Caper' in the sense of running around having fun, =great, but capers in jars? *shudder* I'm glad someone else thinks so, anyway.
Oh, another word, when used in politics: 'dodgy'. Do these newsreaders think they're 'in' with the younger generation when they say 'dodgy dossier' etc? They use it ALL the time for anything suspect. Ugh.

trendy is always used to refer to people who *aren't*, like 'trendy vicar' or 'trendy mum'.
Not to say these people can't be trendy, but the image I get in my head from those descriptions is always really gimpy.

'Cool'
So stupid.
I've never liked the word 'Hi' , it just doesn't feel natural saying it or hearing it said in an English accent.

Argh I hate all these lifestyle words, lifestyle is one of them. Fashion, casual, style, relax, oh and the word quench really pisses me off! I dont, nor will I ever want to "quench my thirst" I just want a bloody drink! Grrrrr......
Routine. The idea offends me.
Random. In the sense of people saying "Oh, and some random bloke came up to me" YOU DON'T NEED TO PUT RANDOM THERE! IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE! IT SOUNDS STUPID!
WAAAAAAAAY! WOOOO! In the sense of- Big Brother housemates returning to the house after the security scare. What a stupid thing to do. You don't cheer when you walk in the front door, after all. See also students. WAAAAAAAAY! It's Dave! Yes, I know who I am.
Or when they get back. WOOOOOOO! WAAAAAY!
Must they announce their arrival at top volume?
What the hell happened to "Good Evening" as a greeting? Why has it been replaced with people shouting? I don't like loud things. Not because of some sensitive condition, simply because they annoy me.
Oh, and the word yay. Are you trying to be cute?
i cant stand childish sounding words like 'yummy', 'tummy', 'mummy', 'daddy', 'granny'...
and I CANT FUCKING STAND american sounding words like 'pops', 'kiddo', 'coach'.

It really bugs me when people say bugger. People started saying it a lot more after it was used in a Toyota commercial. I'm just sick of it.
Also, the phrase "Not happy Jan" also shits me. Enough!!
I heard a phrase I really liked the other day though, the kids who play in my road like to think they're real 'street' South London types, and they were chatting outside my window and one of the kids was getting a bit cross, and the other one said 'Why you gettin all extra on me man?'
Maybe I'm getting old, and everyone's using it. But I thought it was great.

Speaking of great expressions, on another forum i post on, this guy has started a thread about Tom Watson (Labour MP) and his blog (http://www.tom-watson.co.uk/teens.html) aimed at teenagers on his website. It's bloody hilarious and i especially like this gem "harsh your buzz" :D
And other words i hate are totally and like. People say it waay to often
"well...." followed by something else, such as "well cool". Where I live, the entire school uses that. The words 'tight' and 'harsh' are also used to much in Chesterfield.

i think the most overused word in the world at the moment is "LOL"
it has ceased to mean anything, it just means that you cant think of anything to say in an msn convo eg
Person 1 : hi
Person 2 : lol
or
Person 1: I went out last night
Person 2 : lol
I get that all the time! whats funny about saying hello? is that other person really laughing out loud as they type that? i very much doubt it, so why fucking type it!!!
what used to be a usefull internet acronym has become useless and has lost all meaning...meaning that when you do actually laugh out loud, you have to type ROFLMAO or something, to emphasise the point that you did actually find the previous comment funny...but its still a lie, because when have you ever actually rolled on the floor laughing during and msn convo? and if you did, as you would be on the floor it would be exceptionally difficult to type, as you would be on the floor!
another one where i live is "lad". typical convo between to townies, or scallies as we call them here:-
Scall 1: alright lad
Scall 2: alright lad, where were you last night?
Scall 1: lad, i was in the park
Scall 2: were you lad?
Scall 1: yeah lad
how fucking annoying!
I have once actually heard that word used 3 times in one sentence...no joke!

i hate the drawl all these "cool" 16 year olds come out with these days -
"and i was like . . . "
"and he was going . . . "
"i was soooo, like . . . out of it"

but crumpets are tasty!
random is great! i love it!
yes, lol is silly even though i use it loads. and LMAO! i have a m8 who uses that all the time on msn and its so irritating! she said 'what are u up 2?' and I said 'nothing much' and then she just came out with 'lmao'...i mean, i didn't think i was that funny...
ooooh and 'extra' is great too! i haven't used that in ages!
I don't really like people calling me a 'lady', it makes me sound too old. maybe it's just me. It can also sound kinda sleazy, when guys say 'alright ladies?' or whatever.
I like it when any old word becomes a big craze and is used all the time- a couple of years ago half my school used the word 'nuts' (spelt knutz) all the time and it was great!

"pukka",go away oliver!"you know what i mean"No i dont know what you mean just say it!
at the moment i hate it when people say see ya later.
even if i dont see the person for a few days they will say it.
i think you wont see me later its another 4 days yet.
It's quite annoying, when people say "thing" because they're too lazy or not articulate enough to come up with the right word to say what they mean.
e.g. "I'm not being thing, but she should get a haircut"
"I find that really... thing"
WHAT ARE THEY ON ABOUT???

I know exactly what you mean, though i do it all the time, not because im not articulate enough, just my brain works quite slowly and i can never remember the right word.
I expect I probably say stuff that annoys people all the time. Once I find a phrase or word I like I use it all the time. Some of my favourites are:
"Mad as a bag of hammers"
"Keeping it real" (jokingly, not like Craid David or something!)
"Knob-jockey"
"Faaaarking hell"
Hee hee I should really grow up  :D
When talking about the manics-
"urgent"

'Sell out' I hate it because of the arogant, elites music use it to discribe any band who are played on radio 1 about bands they forerly liked.
And the most over used word is 'love', it's just lost all the meaning.
Why does nobody say 'oh my giddy aunt' anymore?
I knew someone who used to say literally far too much, he literally used to say it literally all the literally bloody time literally! even though he literally didn't need to and literally wasn't using it correctly 99% of the time.

I like saying 'Ya,' but you have to do it as if you were an extra in Fargo.
The one I hate right now is EXTREME, specially when it's spelled X-TREME. X-TREME SPORT, X-TREME TV, although I might have to check out the Extreme Drumming festival I heard about on the radio.
