Turns out that Heathrow is going to have to kill/cull eggs of the Canadian geese cos they pose a threat to the flight path? The culling itself is awful.
They insert a needle into the albumen of the developing egg and stir it around so that the eggs dont hatch.
Surely the geese have every right to be there...??

That makes me so fucking angry. Thats horrible. Just so easyjet can provide 10 quids flights to the fucking costa del sol.

It makes me sick.

That is quite horrible - I hope the animal activists have something to say about that. :(

I'm not supporting it, but would you rather that or a plane load of people being brought down and killed?

Saying the geese have a right to be there is not going to stop that, is it? Although i would have thought there had to be other options.

Surely, they could just move the eggs and geese to a sanctuary?

Yeah, that would be the right thing to do.

But of course culling them is cheaper and far more convenient

why dont they collect the eggs and sell them to posh restaurants....i'm sure a Canadian geese egg omelette would go down a treat :D

I imagine we are talking about a fair number of geese here, there are an awful lot of geese around in this country - where could you take them that would be able to afford to feed them. And anyway, geese can fly. So to stop that you'd either have to clip their wings or cage them - which sounds pretty cruel to me.

I'm sure that pretty much any kind of property development anywhere in the world has an adverse effect on the environment, and as we all live in houses, cities, use roads, airports etc it's just an unfortunate side-effect of our way of life. Unless Canadian geese are especially rare or some kind of protected species, then I don't think it's that big a deal really..I don't want to sound cruel, but it's very easy to get worked up about such things without really considering the alternatives, e.g. I used to despair at the roads being built through our countrysides and think what a terrible shame it is that so much of our scenery is being ruined forever, but unfortunately I'm part of the problem in that I travel on motor transport so I can't really complain about it unless I'm willing to sit in traffic jams for hours. Until they can come up with more ecologically sound ways of travelling or building, then we don't have much choice. Unfortunately just doing nothing and leaving everything as it is just isn't an option when one considers what a small country we have and the ever increasing demand for housing, roads, etc.
