People with blue eyes have a single, common ancestor, according to new research.
A team of scientists has tracked down a genetic mutation that leads to blue eyes. The mutation occurred between 6,000 and 10,000 years ago, so before then, there were no blue eyes.
"Originally, we all had brown eyes," said Hans Eiberg from the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine at the University of Copenhagen.

is having blue eyes good or bad? am i a result of inbreeding because both my parents have blue eyes? i don't want a child with six toes and four faces :( (I don't want a child at all actually!)
does the reason i prefer young men with brown eyes indicate a need to remove blue eyed people from the population?

Green eyes are just brown eyes with too little pigment if I remember correctly. Grey eyes are blue eyes with very little pigment. We were thaught at school that blue eyes were sort of a genetic mistake. "Normal" eyes should be brown and it's the lack of pigment that creates blue eyes. Most newborn babies have blue eyes that turn brown after a while. I was born with blue eyes, now they're brown though I was convinced they were red when I was a child.
As for ginger hair, there was a theory that it may be a neanderthal(sp?) trait. You're not "entirely" homo sapien:P Which is why I die my hair black as soon as the sun gives me that reddish tinge.

Surely that can be said about hair colour and skin colour - that it's all down to the amount of pigment.
Although I am confused by this thread that blue eyes are a "mistake" just because they haven't been around that long.

No, it just means that you and their dad had recessive blue eyed blond genes, which were disguised by the dominant dark haired dark eyed genes. I love genetics.

Yeah, isn't there a theory that we all share a common piece of DNA that can be traced back to a single female about 140,000 years ago in Kenya (or thereabouts)? (they've called her 'Eve')
I think there is a common male DNA thing too, but not from the same time period.

I really want to do a diagram to show how the above statement works...
I had a friend at school that really disliked biology because it said his dad could not possibly be his real dad. I doubt he ever confronted his parents about it.
Blue eyes are reccesive while brown eyes are dominant. A brown eyed and a blue eyed parent will most likely produce brown eyed offspring. That brown eyed offspring will carry genes for blue eyes so if they decide to reproduce with another brown eyed person with the same genes they can easily produce blue eyed offspring. A blue eyed child only carries the genes for blue eyes because if they had the gene for brown eyes their eyes would have been brown since it's the domonant gene, therefore 2 blue eyed people can only produce blue eyed offspring. I THINK that's the case. It makes sense to me but they never really explained it at school.
Man I'm bored today. Sorry about the rant.
Blue eyes are reccesive while brown eyes are dominant. A brown eyed and a blue eyed parent will most likely produce brown eyed offspring. I have grey eyes (supposedly the most recessive gene) Dave has the brownest of brown eyes (supposdly the most dominant gene) All three children have grey eyes and blonde hair.

That we will be sending you to the camps, post haste.
It means fuck all.
OK. I don't understand how it goes for green eyes, I think it's a fairly complex case; but grey eyes are simply very pale blue eyes.
Everyone has two genes controlling their eye colour, for simplicity let's ignore green and hazel, because I don't remember, and concentrate on brown and blue.
Call Brown genes B (using a capital letter because they're 'dominant genes' i.e. they overrule the blue genes.)
Call blue genes b (using a small letter because they're 'recessive', and are overruled by Brown)
You can be BB - two brown genes, which means you have brown eyes.
You can be Bb - one brown and one blue gene, which means you have brown eyes, because Brown is dominant.
You can be bb - two blue genes, which means you have blue eyes, because there is no brown eyed gene to overrule it.
So, you can be brown eyed and BB, or brown eyed and Bb.
When your body produces sperm or eggs, each sperm or egg only gets one of the two genes, in an approximately 50:50 split. So, if you're BB, all your eggs or sperm carry the B gene. If you're Bb, then half of them will carry the b gene.
Bb brown eyed people therefore have the potential, with the right mate, to have blue eyed children. It doesn't matter how brown their eyes are, even if they're almost black, if they've got that recessive blue gene, they can have blue eyed kids.
Now, I'm going to be clever and use different colours to show different parents. Where I say 'half' or 'quarter', this is an average that works out over the general population, and it's entirely possible that within one family or two or three or four kids, they'll all get the same combination, because it's down to chance, and evens out over large numbers, not small ones.
If a Bb person has kids with a BB person, then on average half the kids will be BB, with the dominant B gene from each parent. Half of them will be bB, with a dominant B from the second parent, and a recessive b (blue) from the other parent. ALL the kids will actually have brown eyes, but half of them will 'carry' the recessive blue eyed gene.
If a Bb person has kids with another Bb person, then a quarter of the kids will be BB, a quarter will be Bb, a quarter will be bB, and a quarter will be bb.
Of course, Bb and bB are the same thing, so we'll add the two quarters together to give a half.
So, a quarter of the kids will be brown eyed, with no blue eyed genes. Half will be brown eyed, with recessive blue eyed genes, making three quarters of the kids of two Bb parents brown eyed. Again, remember, this is an average. One quarter of the kids of two Bb parents will be blue eyed.
Now, imagine that a Bb parent (e.g. Dave, or my mum, or me, or lots of other brown eyed people) mates with a bb person. On average, half of the kids will be bb, blue eyed, and half of them will be Bb, brown eyed, but 'carrying' the blue eyed gene. In my family, my maternal grandma was Bb, and my maternal grandfather was bb. My uncle was bb, with blue eyes, my mum was Bb, with very dark eyes, but 'carrying' the blue eyed gene. My mum had two kids with a blue eyed man (bb). I'm brown eyed, carrying blue (Bb) and my sister is blue eyed (bb).
Very occasionally, and this is not unknown, a random mutation in one sperm or egg can cause two blue eyed parents to have a brown eyed child. This is confusing, and potentially heartbreaking, but it does happen. Fortunately there are thousands and thousands of genes, and paternity tests can be done using them, not just the eye gene.
I'm running out of non mutant parts now. Drat it.

Nearly everyone in my family has blue eyes - there's a photo from my grandmother's 75th birthday party of all her grandchildren and we all have blue eyes, fair hair, and pale skin - with the exception of my sister who has dark hair, brown eyes and olive skin and just looks like an intruder as she looks so different to the rest of us. When we were little, someone once had the nerve to ask my mum in a supermarket if me and my sister had the same father.

I have the same eyes as my father and grandfather and the same teeth/gums as my uncle and grandmother, and none of the four of us look particularly like each other.
In fact, if it were not for the fact that my father and uncle have inherited other, different elements from my grandfather, I'd be tempted to think there was some funny business going on.

That's exactly the same situation we have - my Dad's very dark and my sister's inherited his colouring, and I've inherited my mum's. But some people can't seem to understand that children don't automatically look like a mixture of both their parents.
It's interesting that they don't know why blue eyes ever occured, I read somewhere else online that the last blonde person will be born in 200 years time.
Well, does there need to be a reason?
I dunno, that seems a bit too short a time period, given how blonde the scandanavian countries are.
I think the Baltic countries are blonder, probably because I live in Scandinavia. Most of the blondes around the world today are bottle blondes anyway.
What I want to know is why there are so few redheads. I thought the ginger gene was more dominant than the blonde but for some reason there are far more blondes than redheads. Maybe it's true they used to kill red haired babies. I read this was a common practice in Greece and other countries cos they thought it meant the baby came from the devil or something.

I thought ginger was the most recessive. I've got several ginger cousins from ginger parents who married into our almost entirely dark haired clan, so I assumed some recessive ginger was going on in my family.
What I always wondered is does eye colour vary according to nurture? Ignoring my mum (green eyes, very recessive) everyone in my family has the same eye colour, but my dad and bro have very dark blue eyes, whereas mine are very pale grey-blue.
