The BBC emailed me this a while ago, but I didn't bother posting it as I had nothing nice to say, and would only end up making soem joke about his wife.

For some reason my head keeps turning this into "I suppose he wasn't bad as a wife" I wonder why?:D

If you're a horrible person, I am too.
To be perfectly honest, I don't care much.

Did he really just get "sir" for being her husband?

I'd say she was probably more evil than G W Bush.

She was certainly more dangerous, as she had more than 2 braincells to rub together.

The interesting thing is that she is probably the most influential British Prime Minister of the 20th Century after Winston Churchill, the only one known abroad and the one most likely to make it in the history books...

What does this say about this country?

I know, it worries me that one of the most enduring politcal images of the last few decades is that of Maggie defiantly swinging her handbag and walking through the desolate coalfield. I also get annoyed by people saying that they admire her for her stong character. Hitler had a strong character you know....

What I was thinking about is more than simply Maggie iconographic role (BTW Has anybody else read Marina Warner's chapter on Maggie's iconography in her brilliant "Monuments and Maidens"?Required reading.).

I am thinking that it is easy to demonise Maggie as it is easy demonise Hitler or Mussolini. The sheer fact is that she was legally elected three times Prime Minister of this country. What does this say about the country who elected her?

My personal opinion is that she was simply the perfect embodiement of her times and place...

Maggie epitiomised the 80s culture of selfishness and greed.

SHe helped create it, and she was also a product of it.
