View Full Version : esso national tree week
Ok, Esso have the worst human rights and environmental record I can practically think of, from pressuring the rejection of the Kyoto treaty to supporting Bush, to uprooting countless communities with zero recompense in the search for oil. And then I see a little snippet saying that that Esso are sponsoring 'Esso national tree week', where they're going to attempt a world record in tree planting.
To my mind it's a thinly-disguised PR exercise. What do people think? link to follow.
here's (http://www.stopesso.com/campaign/00000083.php) stopesso.com's activists' response...

Ahh its all a sham.
Also have you seen these environmentally friendly awards, every oil company has one. “ oh well done guy’s only on oil tanker crashed this year, god work have an award”

A company that has a higher profitability than quite a few non third world countries.
They still empty their billages in The Solent (Southampton).
I think with Bush and Esso they kinda believe that there is no hardcore evidence to suggest that global warming is an anthroprogenic (humans) process..that in a way its a natural phenomena. By planting more trees to the g.public its like they 'care' but in all honesty its a way for more trees to take up more CO2 and therefore meet the new US Climate Control Assessment thing..they dont want to commit to Kyoto cos it lacks evidence apparently.
But if you ever get bored..look on sites like IPCC and the rate of sea level rise and ice cap melting.
I agree science and assessments need to evolve a bit more..cos at the moment there is not enough evidence to suggest that Greenland (?) is retreating or gaining more ice..also the problem with the gulf stream..will the UK get hotter or cooler?? Its all pretty complicated and I'm a wee bit too tired to go into depth..its to do with Isostatic Uplift and currents getting trapped or released..etc etc.. (Isostasy and Eustasy in simplist terms) :right:
Oh and sorry...
Co.s like Shell and BP have agreed that new renewable energy sources are the future..but guess who doesnt want to comply??
E$$O
They'll jump on board when the other guys are getting somewhere and then takeover the market and take away the profitability and no doubt ethics and yes I know Shell has been ethically bad in the 1950s in Africa (i.e Nigeria).

*flashing red light and sirens* wanker alert! I love the bit with
"Personally I've always had a fascination with trees, and I welcomed the opportunity to represent ExxonMobil today at this event, which portrays the lesser-known side of our work, namely our long-standing support for community-based initiatives."
Ha. And the bit about being good corporate citizens. Right then.
