Bush asks Senate for fairness on high court opening (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/07/01/AR2005070101057.html)

Sanda Day O'Conner, one of the more moderate justices by the Rehnquist Court's standards has just stood down...if Bush gets his nomination through, I think the USA is on the verge of massive prolonged battles over abortion, religion, and gay rights...

Bush will get his nominations through.

With very little fight, I fear. The compromise that was set up over judicial fillibusters will stand through this (trust me, the issue of a Justice stepping down was a LOT of what was talked about in reaching that compromise), and there is no way without that delay that the Dems could keep someone from the bench.

I don't think all will be lost, but I do think this is going nowhere good.

Quite the contrary, I think the fight over this and any future nominees is going to be severe. Bush's approval ratings and popularity have been taking a severe beating in recent months...it will be very difficult for him to push through the nomination of an ultra-conservative justice. Just look at the difficult time he is having with the Bolton confirmation, and the only negative things that the Dems could pull up about him are that he has a short temper.

I think this is a pretty good summation of what I think too!:)
